At work, I have a really nice Dell Dimension system its rock solid stable, fast, and incredibly quiet. The only way I know I have it on is by looking at it or working on it. Were talking QUIET here.
At home, I was running a fairly overclocked system, with lots of fans and noise and hard drives and cables and well, you get the idea. The nice big black-lighted aluminum monster under my desk was too loud for my tastes. Not quite hairdryer or black-label Delta loud, but still 3x80mm fans, 1x 60mm exhaust, 1x Vantec Aeroflow (quietest fan in the box) and a 450 watt power supply its loud enough to be annoying.
Recently got a new case, though, that solved EVERYTHING for me. www.Case-Mod.com shipped out an Antec Sonata "piano black" case, and blew my mind.
I am not posting pictures- too much of a pain in the ass to get it all done right now. Go search out some reviews or other pics elsewhere. Its worth it this case is fucking gorgeous. At about 100 bucks, you get a perfectly finished case (we're talking automotive grade shine on this black beauty) with all sorts of noise reduction tech going on, some very innovative hard drive mounting, a 120mm fan on the rear, and a 380W Antec TruPower supply. Quite the deal, if you ask me.
Looking at it, I thought that there might not be enough room for all my stuff, or that it would be a tight fit to work in. I was wrong. This case was a complete dream to install in- I have never had a better time setting up the innards of a computer before. The drives ALL mount on rails. The hard drives screwed onto rails from the bottom which had rubber grommets to reduce vibration. The CD bays are even cooler I popped out the front covers, slid in my CDROM, and started cursing where the hell am I supposed to put the screws? How thoughtless of Antec to not include rails!
My wife tapped me on the shoulder Honey, she says, Whats this?
In her hand was the drive bay cover with the rails snapped down on the inside. Talk about convenience! Amazing, wild, wacky stuff, as Mr. Carson (as in Johnny, youngsters) might say.
What about cooling, you ask me I popped a second 120mm fan (optional) from Vantec on the drive bay (kind of weird how everything mounts, placement wise. Neat though.), and off I ran with my system. Before, my processor, an AMD Barton 2500+ @ 3200+ ran solidly around 47-55 degrees Celcius. My temp has dropped 10 degrees.
Yes, TEN. Why? Probably just better airflow in general. The 2x120 fans really move a lot of air quietly, and its a smooth flow from front to back of the case. Theres no window blowholes to mess with the flow, and theres very few cables in the case blocking air, either. Oh, and as a side note, the fans are plugged into cables from the power supply that say "fan only" - they regulate the fan speeds based on temperature. I love it.
I have to tip my hat to www.case-mod.com for some GREAT customer service and excellent pricing. These guys are very, very good at what they do.
