i am putting together an old "retro computer" just for fun with some parts aroud the house. i am using 48- 64 megs of EDO ram on an unnamed socket 7 Mobo ( have no clue who makes it) an amd k62 450 mhz cpu (wooot) an old 10 gig harddrive, a vanta tnt2 agp video card, an old soundblaster sound card (circa 1999)i just need help with input options, it supposedly had usb options but i plugged a fron usb into said port on the mobo and it almost caught on fire :eek:. i cant spend much and the only rear io port its has is a really old keyboard or mouse port (cant tell its not ps2, older) and i also have serial ports
 
I have a 200Mhz P1 with 256MB RAM and a 40GB HD that I run Linux on. Originally just had 32MB RAM and a 4GB HD.

I had a 486, but I threw it out a long time ago.

Hahahha! I have this exact same setup! I got a compaq presario 4200 (i think is the model) and its exactly like that. I love how we think our PCs are slow now...but back then man were they REALLY slow. good luck!!
 
... now i have a question regarding the build, i got a hold of a more " retro " cpu ( p1 mmx) and when i turn the system on i get no picture, with the k62 i do get a picture. with both cpus it does turn on just with the p1 mmx theres no picture.
 
It's amazing how fast the computer industry has changed. I still have an old Office Max Ad with a 700MHZ processor and 32MB ram with a 10GB HD for a whopping 1300.00 bucks!! There's more too, I got a whole bunch of Best Buy and Comp-USA ads. I laugh when I take a look at them once in a while. :D
 
The keyboard connection you have is an AT connection. I'm typing on an AT keyboard with a PS2 adapter at this moment. Working great! Good luck on the P1 problem. I want my retro computers back... :(

Does it beep or do the fans just spin up?

If it's not beeping or anything did you change the jumpers for the new cpu? K6-2's used a 2.2v Vcore, P55c's used a 2.8v Vcore . You also need to change jumpers for the multiplier and FSB.
 
I still run my Dell P5-100 from time to time when I want to use old stuff that doesn't run under NT-based windows.


But if you guys want oldschool, I still have a functioning Commodore Vic-20. With tape drive. Audio cassette tape drive. I remember as a kid having to wait like 15 minutes to load Snake and thinking it was just the greatest thing ever.

the fans spin up, no beeps, the hard drive is active and all the jumpers are set and i found the motherboard model its an MSI MS5184
 
i had something VERY similar... although with SD ram :p got it from my friend for free and i fixed it (his mom's BF fucked it up hardcore...) 8mb integrated graphics, K6-2 @ 600... it owned lmfao

the motherboard NEVER liked ANY intel CPU i put into, only the K6-2 would work. just keep that and slap win2k on it or something...

I just got rid of mine a few years ago. Man that tape drive was great!

Nice laptop. I have one just like it, and I'm also lucky enough to still have my VIC-20 box. Most people think I'm weird for collecting that old crap, but I knew you guys would get it ;)

Considering you can buy a Dell P3-450 w/256mb RAM, 40gb HDD, Ethernet and sound card and cdrom for $23 at Retrobox, why bother trying to fix this other system at all?
 
fun, i have a p3 450 448mb of ram 20 gig hd for free, im just bored, i also like old hardware ( i know, im kinda wierd)
 
I still have my first 2 computers from when I was a kid......Commodore 64 and Apple IIe. freaking dinosaurs
