is the only way to get back all the data on my sata raid array (striped) to have it hooked up to the exact same raid chip? -sil3112 on ga-8knxp that just died

You need the same stripe settings, too. Some mfgs provide utilities that can reinitialize stripesets without blowing them away, but to my knowledge Sil is not one of them.

i found a pci card that has teh same sil chip, do you think that i would be able to rebuild the array using that chip without losing any data?

would very much appreciate a response... i need to format the drives and i have alot of data that i need to get off the drives if its possible.

To be frank, you're going to be a guinea pig. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I can't tell you for certain unless I try it myself with the exact same setup. The el-cheapo raid adapters are flaky at best.

when confronted with the same situation 4 years ago
I wrote off the array rather than buy a replacement mobo with the same chip

as Snugglebear points out its possible
but the implementation is variable

i need to format the drives

why?
That doesnt sound promising
