How do I remove the retention plate on the back of the motherboard so I can install a Zalman heatsink?
 
There should be just two screws on the front/top side of the motherboard.

Its in the plastic bottom cage part. Unscrew those, and the back will drop off. Not sure for the zalman if you need the plastic cage part afterwards.
 
I think if it was that easy nobody would ask the question.
The plate is actually glued to the board
I Used a blow drier to heat it up and it came off esay
afew things to be aware of:

static : let the blow drier ON for a minute before you try, set it to the highest temp
try no to blow on the componets.

go around the plate blowing about two inches from plate, slowly until it gets hot enough, DON"T overheate!!

try it once and if it does n't come off easy by pushing the posts with finger from the other side, warm up some more

very clean way to remove

don't try any metal devices, motherboard scratchs very easy
