Retail Opteron Heatpipe

I got a retail 165 coming ... do you think the retail opteron heatpipe will be suffucient to OC?

IS the ZALMAN CNPS9500 LED worth the money ... is there another cooler that maybe is half the price but cools a couple degrees warmer
 
I've OCed to 2.3GHz with comfortable temps. If you want to OC past that, you'll want better cooling.
 
but you gotta know if you replace the stock 80x20 fan with an 80x25 or and 80x38 fan, temps will be even lower, as this HSF already is on par with an xp90.
 
Its on par with the xp90, thats good to know

what about the zalman, is it worth the money and is there anything that is cheaper but almost on par with that

I am looking for the best bang for the buck

I saw a review once suggesting the best bang for the buck HS but I can not find it
 
bang for buck != low noise.

and im nearly 100% sure that a new fan costs less then an xp90. i might be wrong but you never know. :rolleyes:
 
ok, guys I get your point, I will try the retail first

its just the zalman is onsale at newegg in an 8 hour sale :)

On a side note, from my memory, I think it was a Scythe that this site listed as best bang for the buck ... to bad I cant find the article anymore
 
the Scythe Ninja is probably what you are talking about. It performs great and many say its the top performing air cooler out there, but your stock heatsink is already decent. Changing out the fan will cost anywhere from 3-10 bucks versus 50 bucks for a Ninja and fan. If you are not happy with the temps with the stock, you can always purchase the Ninja later on, there are usually good deals on this cooler and i would pick this over the Zalman.
 
Can you guys recommend a better fan than the one the 165 comes with ... I know nothing about fans and fan accessories

I have a retail, never used, AX - 7, it has a large fan, can I use that
 
Any 80mm fan works. The stock 80mm fan is a delta and draws .75a. It's a good fan.

Well after reading this thread and the review, I was intrigued. Since people pointed out the guy didnt use a 92mm fan with the panaflo, I decided to benchmark it myself. I happen to have the same opty 165 cooler. I actually bought the retail box then sold the cpu but kept the heatsink.

So I decided to take some time and uninstall my xp-90 w/ 2500rpm 92mm panaflo and install the brand new stock opty heatsink. I run an opteron 144 CACJE oc'd to 2.6ghz w/ 1.425 volts. Similar to what the reviewer on the site had.

Well I have to say, I am definitely amazed.......

Temps with XP-90 w/ 92mm panaflo at 2500rpm(which is fairly loud with that high of cfm):

34C idle
42C load

Temps with the stock 165 copper heatpipe heatsink:

33C idle
41C load



My temps dropped by 1C for both idle and load with the stock heatsink! I was blown away that a stock cooler I got for FREE, performed pretty much the same, even slightly better than a cooler I paid $35 for? Wow....im not sure what to say. I definitely wasnt expecting it to perform that well. I am actually debating selling my xp-90 right now since the fan on the stock cooler is actually quieter than my 92mm fan for my xp-90.

If I recall correctly (while currently looking at a stock 275 HSF at work), AMD uses 70MM fans, not 80MM fans on their stock heatsinks.
 
im runnin 3.1 on air with stock

148 opteron

45c full load.......

but im useing special heatsink compound....no i cant say what it is.....you cant buy it so dont ask......space shuttle eqipment rocks!!!!!!

Thats why you take out a backbreaking $2 and buy a 70mm to 80mm fan reducer ;)
 
The new HSFs are available on ebay for as little as $5 (and as much as $24.95). I bought one of the $5 ones. )
 
I bought two from that guy last week . $5 and $10 dollars shipping for first one then $5 for 2nd one.For $25 bucks it's a great deal it even came with the boxes from the retail x2 4400's. Shipped fast. I'm going to use it on my second opteron system. I just got a 144 from monarch for 135 week 46 cab2e. building a second gaming rig for friends that come to visit.
 
Got 2 of those on the way. Can't beat that for $25.

And I was just getting ready to buy one XP-90 and a fan for $35! Thanks for the link ho72.
 
They really are good heatsinks, look at the Max Thermal Output for a 4800+ (on the box shown in the auction) --> 110W...Same as the Opteron 165...

Thanks for the link, I need aheatsink for my 3500+, practically double rated for my 67W processor...

XP90 isn't that good of a cooler anymore. I know, i used to have one.

Try the Big Typhoon or Arctic Freezer 64 Pro if you want a good AMD heatsink.
 
I wouldnt say that. Xp-90 is a great heatsink but the stock 4 copper heatpipe sink is definite a great heatsink as well. I got one for free so I sold my xp-90(since the stock cooler is actually significantly quieter). Those other heatsinks you mentioned arnt much better than the xp-90. Big typoon is good, of course it costs more.

I actually benchmarked both the xp-90 with a 92mm panaflo @ 2500rpm vs the 165 stock copper heatpipe heatsink.

I was at 34C idle and 43C load with the xp-90 with 2500rpm panaflo.

My temps with the stock cooler actually dropped 1C to 33C idle and 41-42C load. Basically its about the same. Thats still amazing that a stock cooler performs the same, or even slightly better than a heatsink that costs $30+.

Anyways. :p

I am thinking about getting a vantec tornado or stealth ... I just want a little better cooling if I can find that in a fan

Have you considered scythe ninja with silent 120mm fan? From personal experience between zalman9500, BT and ninja...i consider ninja cools the best in regards to noise which i hate. Whichever you choose, you cant go wrong.
 
I want to keep the heatpipe and start with a different fan, thats why I am asking which fan ...
