Retail and OEM

It's usually what comes in the box, the actual box itself, and a longer warranty(on retail)
 
I'd probably go with the OEM on that card.

CPU's, motherboards and high-end graphic cards I usually get retail, the rest (hard drives, RAM, cases, drives, low-end cards, etc.) I usually go OEM for.
 
Retail - Comes with a nice colorful box, all manual's, games (if a video card), Heatsink Fan (If a CPU), and all cables and everything.

OEM - Bare VideoCard's with no extra Cables, Always comes in Brown box, maybe manual's, no games or extra's.

I always go Retail, with this for example, the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 I have is retail,so all the contact's are Gold Plated, and not Plastic like the OEM version, also most OEM Video Card's are clocked slower then Retail Model's.

ya but drivers arent hard to get, right?

and also, one of you guys said for this you would go OEM, do you guys agree with him?

Like I said above, I only buy Retail, longer warranty, better product, all the extra cables and games and everything.
 
are you sure that most oem video cards are underclocked? That just doesn't make sence to me, because it wouldn't be the same product.
 
yeah, thats true. the video cards tend to be clocked lower than the retail versions. i would buy video cards retail, and if what IoWnZa said is true if i ever buy a sound card it will be retail. other than that i will buy either or. depends what mood i'm in. i buy my cpus oem too.....its not like i use stock cooling anyway. as for the warrenties....meh:rolleyes:
 
I usually go OEM, and some places that sell parts have their own warranties. OEM is a lot cheaper in some cases. Also, OEM = A LOT cheaper in some cases.
 
OEM means just the product, no extras. You get a drivers Disc and maybe a manual (really though who reads them ;)) You get everything necessary to operate the <insert product here>.

I get OEM and Retail (if the price is right). In some cases Retail blows, price hicks, crappy software, out dated drivers, etc..at that point your mostly just paying for the box (like with ATI cards- just the card and nothing extra) The HD I just got has a one year warrenty if I had bought OEM it would have had a three year. Basically just make sure your buying what your buying before you throw down the cash. Alot of the times your no better off if you get Retail over OEM.
Only suckers strictly buy Retail.;) :D

:rolleyes: Thats not true. The only "OEM" I can think of that does that is Dell, I don't buy parts from Dell nor would I ever let one into my home. I have yet to see an OEM card that in underclocked.

I did that for my first setup. The only thing you miss out on when you get OEM are the occasional cable and/or screw. I spend about 500 bucks less on this system than I did with the last one.

I don't know about you but I have too many screws loose to begin with that I hardly miss any. LOL:D
 
OEM cards, (at least the 5 or six geforce fx's) That i put into systems are identical, from color to cooling. Differance is driver, cables etc. Quite often OEM cards do come with cables and drivers, thats really up to the individual company.


OEM and RETAIL versions matter mostly to people purchasing something to sell retail at a store, and generally its in bulk. If you dont own a retail store, i would really go for the cheaper one.
 
i buy my ram OEM because no other cables come with it

and i bought my 2500XP OEM because i bought a HSF in the same shipment(my warranty doesnt matter I OCED it right out of the box:D )

if you ever wanna overclock your CPU and know your going to get an aftermarket HSF, you can just go OEM since the second you up that FSB the warranty goes down the drain anyway:p


oh, and you can get HDD's oem also(i did)

Alot of the times it's better to get those OEM because they have a longer warrenty.
