Retail AMD Processor's and thermal paste

Every AMD and Intel retail boxed processor comes with a heatsink and thermal compound, usually a TIM on the actual heatsink.

what do u mean by TIM becuase i bought a retail venice and all i c on the bottom is a gray square pad. thanks for you reply

No.

Personally I clean off that crappy thermal pad and put some Arctic Silver 5 on the center of the cpu and put the heatsink on, I prefer metal for transferring heat, I don't know about you...

TIM: Thermal interface material, so yeah thats the gray pad on your heatsink.

No you dont need additional thermal paste/compound. It will work just fine if you will not be overclocking. If you want to overclock without frying your processor, you'll probably need better thermal compound such as AS5, and a new shiny heatsink.

k thanks uys for your replys i will pick up some arctic silver here once I get my computer up and running.

I happen to agree with Kyle when it comes to thermal paste. The silver stuff is a bear to deal with. Since I am constantly tweaking my custom w/c blocks and reseating the blocks. the silver stuff just makes a mess and stains everything. A good quality non silver thermal paste is best for me. I've tried just about everything out there and always go back to either ceramique, or good quality paste. Screw that silver mess....
