Thanks for the reply. I ordered the Silver Arrow with the rest of the parts.
The 580 is a reference cooler for now, but I plan to change to a Shaman like your setup if I can find one. A friend of mine keeps telling me to get the Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme Plus II like he has (in his 800D) but I'm not sure if it's the correct design for this case since MMAOmegaRED has temp issues with his.

This has been discussed earlier in this thread and in separate threads. Some have Shamans and AXPs that don't seem to be affected by the case orientation (I'm one of them), others get much poorer results. Wick quality differing batch to batch could be the culprit. I would just buy either of the two coolers at a place with a decent return policy. Personally, I just think Shaman is more aesthetically pleasing when paired with SA or Archon (matching fans) plus it doesn't prevent you from sticking a VRM G2 cooler onto your GTX 580.

Yeah, pretty much. The Zalman VF3000 seems to have varying results in this case too.

Hi All,

I have been following this thread for nearly a year now since I got my Fortress. I have always found it useful for tips and ideas for my own build. There are alot of nice fortress build out there!

At the moment I am looking to install a Scythe Kaze Server and I am wondering about hooking up the 3 AP181 fans and removing the connection from the switches on the top. What do I need to do with them when I disconnect them?

I think this has been discussed previously but I cant find the original posts on the setup.

Anyway appreciate any help you can give me.

If you're hooking up AP181's to a fan controller, you should keep the switches on the high setting. What's the purpose of removing the switches from the top panel? You'll just have to find another place inside the case to hide them.
 
If he removes the switches he can connect them directly to the fan controller giving him more control over the fan speeds and will eliminate the wires going to the switches then back to the controller. If anyone has access to that fan controllers, mean they can physically touch it, I'd recommend mounting in inside the bay that way you don't have to worry about someone accidentally moving your fan settings.

There are no wires going back from the switch to the fan header. The switches can certainly be desoldered, but that's a bit of a DIY project.
 
nice case. it appears to open on the right side as opposed to left like most cases do.
 
I'm about to build a TJ11 build, but it still amazes me that the FT02 thread is still going so strong.

has there been any reports of stock coolers being affected this way (ie. MSI lightning, etc)?

Thanks guys. Thats kinda what I was heading for. I was thinking the switches could then be used for lights. Maybe a bit above my knowledge (considering I know very little about this kind of stuff!)

The Scythe Server has an auto setting I will be using so "they" can play away with the nobs all they want :)
 
Man I want this case so bad, but for some reason I can't justify buying it over a case with more cable management and easier handling of 5.25 bays.
 
I found out today this case isnt very capable of being quiet and cool if your going trifire. Ended up lopping off part of the HDD cage and removing my BDROM to spread my vid cards out and give them more air...still pretty warm but I guess I should expect that from caging 3 monsters up without any water.

I usually buy about 5-7 cases a year. I've kept my FT02 this whole year, from Jan. until now.
It make take until 2013 for a manufacture to top the FT02.

Any case will get warm with three high end cards on air.
A TJ11 on water my be in your future.
 
Does anyone think it would be a bad idea to get rid of the 3 180mm AP fans and installing 3 140mm fans? Im thinking bigger is better but im still curious,thanks.

I'd classify it as beyond bad ;)

Those fans are engineered to make concentrated strong stream of airflow which is needed to work against gravity. Plus they are relatively low noise for the airflow produced.

Also they are rather expensive and easily consist of 20-25% of case cost (and 33% if you go for Raven 2 instead) so that would be a lot of wasted cash.

And apart from super silence (which can be achieved with fan controler for APs) I can't see any benefit of using 3x14

Also, while I love my FT02, there is no question that the TJ07 is the ultimate case, at least for watercooling. I just picked one up and spent most of my weekend gutting it and making some custom panels. Be on the look out for the build log coming up :)

I never considered how they are specially made for the Air Flow being there positioned at the bottom of the case. The main reason I wanted to swap them was because I wanted to put in some Gelid UV reactive Fans at the bottom of the case nothing too flashy or over the top.Although,that was only if I got equal if not better performance.Oh well,thanks for replying.

Grab a cold cathode tube or light rope. They could be easily hidden from direct site in this case.

Remember, thermal dynamics state that heat rises so by putting the fans at the bottom of the case you are pulling cool air from the bottom and pushing it through the top where it becomes warm air. Unlike traditional cases, which actually work against thermal dynamics by moving air horizontally, the FT02 is designed to pull air from the bottom to the top the way heat would rise. This is why the FT02 is such a great air-cooling case.

Minor quibble, but Thermal Dynamics is a company, thermodynamics is the study of heat transfer.
 
Hey guys, For all you have the corsair h series. Do you guys intake air from the top of the case or from the inside? I just wanted to make sure I am doing it right.

Im personally pulling air through the radiator from the inside of the case...my i7 under Prime85 load OC'ed to 4.4 stayed around 72C on the hottest core, usually sits at 35C idle and about 45-50C under load.

Well here is my set up so far have a little bit more of cable management to do and waiting out the GTX 580 till the end of next month since im in no rush(as long as it's before BF3 and Skyrim;) ) Also im thinking about installing a fan Controller for one of the bays but haven't found one thats simple and not cheaply made?? i'll post better pictures and more info of the system specs when im finished.



 
mbrian. I have a similar setup in the same case. I use to have an x58 system in there. With the new system I got rid of the old power supply and bought a Corsair ax850 like you have. The old PSU fit in there quite well. The Corsair AX850 pushes up against the fan/filter cut out so hard that it pops the filter off. What did you do to make it work?

It seems quite a bit louder than the old PSU too... maybe thats because its pushing up against the case so much.

I may return it anyways because it emits a high pitch electrical noise all the time.

With the AX I simply didn't screw in the screws all the way that support the PSU. However, I did screw them in enough to where I wasn't concerned about the PSU falling. Just make sure you get the PSU support clip mounted that came with the FT02 just for additional support. Take a look at my pictures to have a better idea.




I plan on getting Weather Sealing Tape as well just to put on top of the PSU so there is no gap.



Notice the small clearance for the Fan Filter it's just barley enough where it wont interfere with the Filter Clips. of course the PSU fan is not perfect with the case but that shouldn't cause any problem.



As for the PSU noise you may have gotten a bad PSU or it may just be the PSU itself but I don't think it's a common problem but I believe I read some similar problems on customer reviews.
 
So last time I ordered a FT02, I had to order Silverstone Factory Direct via SunDial Micro to ensure I obtained the new Air Penitraitor Fans. At this juncture, am I safe ordering via Amazan or Newegg, or should I still order from the source just to make sure....

What about the Non Window Black version? What is the chance Amazon has those with the Air Penitoraitor fans, and is the windowless one still black inside?
 
Hey guys - I am in the process of buying one of these Silverstone Fortress 2 cases but can somebody clear something up before I go ahead and press the "Buy" button.

Are the hard drive cages tool-less or do they require you to screw the hard drive into the cage?? Also with the single hot-swap bay - does that require screws or does it still require those same screws??

I use the AX850 in my FT02 and had no problems screwing the top 4 screws all the way into the PSU. I didn't have any problems with the rear PSU fan filter popping off either.

For the record, I ordered my FT02 (black with window) a month ago from Newegg and it has the Air Penetrator fans. I'm pretty confident that Amazon also stocks the ones with AP fans as well since it's been a while since Silverstone switched to the APs in the FT02. I'd assume the inside of the windowless case would be black.

you need to screw the hard drive into the cage. the hot swap bay is just like the other bays and requires the same screws as well.

I thought this was the best tower to choose for several reason (proper airflow being the main thing), but the design looks so much like a Mac Pro Tower. If you want all the details, just let me know and I'll give you all the details. This unit is pretty much filled to the hilt with some modding involved. Would appreciate any feedback. Later...
