Long time lurker here, finally putting together a VERY quiet Silverstone FT02 build. Let me know if any of this doesn't make sense or will definitely have spatial issues.

Case: SILVERSTONE Fortress Series FT02B Black
PSU: CORSAIR AX850 850W
CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K
CPU Cooler: Prolimatech Megahalems Rev.B
CPU Cooler fans: Akasa 120mm x 25mm Apache Black Super Silent PWM Fan x3 (one to replace the exhaust on FT02) on Akasa PWM Splitter
Mobo: ASUS SABERTOOTH P67 LGA 1155
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3 1600
GPU: EVGA 015-P3-1580-AR GeForce GTX 580
GPU Cooler: Thermalright Spitfire w/ GF-100 BTK and Thermalright TR TY-140 140mm x 160mm PWM Fan -
Thermalright VRM-G2 VGA Voltage Regulator Cooler - Should fit 580 if one screw is removed. Will it interfere with CPU cooler/fans?

Is the PSU fan going to align with the case opening? Is the PSU fan grille going to be pushing against the removable dust filter?
Are the RAM heat sinks too tall and will conflict with the CPU push fan?
Spitfire will obviously be pointing towards the front of the case, not towards the CPU. It has the correct heat pipe orientation and won't have the issues that Shaman and Accelero Xtreme Plus have in this case. Am I going to be able to install a PCI sound card (ASUS Xonar Essence ST) in a slot under the heat sink or does it sit pretty close to the mobo?
The 480 VRM cooler should fit 580 if one screw is removed. Will it interfere with CPU cooler/fans?

Any help would be appreciated.

Done with the build, just need to do some cable management.

Takeaway points:
1) Thermalright Spitfire won't fit in FT-02 in either orientation if you have 180mm optical drives and a tower CPU cooler. Went with a Thermalright Shaman and a modded (broke off one screw) Thermalright VRM-G2 instead.
2) G.Skill Ripjaws X series heat spreaders are too tall to have a push fan on the Thermalright Silver Arrow and still be able to close the side panel. I have the fans in a pull-pull configuration, does not seem to be noisier.
3) Didn't try the Thermalright Archon, since the Silver Arrow is around 5mm shorter and already touches the side panel foam.
4) Asus Sabertooth P67 has its only PCI slot in the last position making a PCI sound card a tight fit even with 90 deg SATA cables. Went with Asus P67 Deluxe instead.

Here's the final config after some tweaking:
Case: Silverstone FT02B Black, replaced 120mm exhaust fan with an Akasa Apache PWM fan.
PSU: Corsair AX850
CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K
CPU Cooler: Thermalright Silver Arrow with its two TY-140 fans and the Akasa Apache case exhaust fan hooked up to the mobo's PWM connector via an Akasa PWM splitter.
Mobo: Asus P8P67 Deluxe
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB DDR3 1600 CL9
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 580
GPU Cooler: Thermalright Shaman and passive Thermalright VRM-G2
SSD: Waiting.
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200 RPM suspended upside down (PCB up) in a NoiseMagic NoVibes III.
Optical drives: LG WH10LS30 10X Blu-ray Burner and LG GH24LS50 DVD Burner
Sound card: ASUS Xonar Essence ST
TIM: Arctic Cooling MX-4
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OEM

Silver Arrow and Shaman take up most of the case interior with their combined three TY-140s and 3.5 heatsink fin banks if you count VRM-G2 for half. At stock speeds CPU idles around room temp, at full load goes to 38C. GPU idles at 29C, at full load goes to 50C. The whole rig is barely audible when idle and very inoffensive at full load. Essence ST is driving my Sennheiser HD600s very well, no need for a separate headphone amp.

Would you mind posting a photo of your build when you get a chance? That's almost the exact same configuration as the system I plan on buying. I'd like to see how it looks once it's all together. The only changes that will be different on my system is I'm going with the Lite-On BD Burner which I think is shorter to allow a little more space if I go SLI in the future. And I'm staying with the stock EVGA GTX 580 cooler.

Recommendations on online purchase of this case to guarantee to get it with the air penetrator fans?

I buy mainly from Amazon and Newegg. There is a Fry's about 20 miles from me, so that is also an option if need be to visually check it out before purchase.

I used a magic trick which helped me to know which revision is sold in shops:

i sent them email with question ;)
100% success ratio ;)

Yes, I'll take some pictures later today after I tame the tangle of cables preventing me from closing the right side panel.

Stock cooler was giving me 40ish C idle and 65C at full load and was pretty loud compared to the rest of the system. If you want to keep the option of SLI'ing a second GTX 580, I would just buy an Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme Plus. It is marginally louder than the Shaman, but cools just as well and takes up the same single PCI slot below the GTX 580's PCB as the stock cooler. The Shaman makes GTX 580 a 4 PCI slot card. Then again, I don't currently know of a single site that has the VR004 AXP mounting kit in stock. By the way, both the Shaman and the AXP have their heat pipes running along the length of the card, which is sub-optimal for mounting them vertically in FT-02, but they still work a lot better and a lot quieter than the stock cooler.

I've heard the Lite-On BD burner is even louder than the LG one I have, but I have no personal experience with it. Lite-On iHBS112/212 is 170mm though vs LG WH10LS30's 185mm, so you're right, it might make for easier cabling. A second 2-slot GTX 580 wouldn't block the bottom PCI slot on Asus P67 Pro/Deluxe (on Sabertooth P67 it would), so even for longer optical drives it's only a problem if you plan on using a PCI-e sound card in the bottom PCI-e 4x slot. Unless you want to shoehorn an Essence ST between the GTX 580's, you'd have to get an Essence STX and put it in that bottom PCI-e 4x slot on the Pro/Deluxe or top PCI-e 1x slot on the Sabertooth. (The top PCI-e 1x is blocked by the Silver Arrow on Pro/Deluxe, but not on the Sabertooth.)

Definitely Amazon. Cheaper base price, free shipping, and mine came with AP fans.

This might be the wrong place to post this, but it mainly refers to this case, so I am posting this question here. If an admin or mod feel it should be moved, please do so.

I'm looking to build a new rig soon as my current setup is getting dated, it still does everything I need it to do, but it's old, sooo....

Currently I'm running an old C2D E6300 @ 3.2ghz (stock is 1.86ghz) using a water cooled setup (Apogee GTz / 240mm rad / MCP655) in my very old P180 which I want to smash with a hammer. It's old, it's ugly, and now that I have installed a 250mm side fan, it's noisy.
IMG_3858.JPG

I'm planning on an i7 2600k system in the near future, although my current hardware will be going in a new case as soon as I figure out what to do.

I love the FT02. It gets great reviews (cooling and silence) and I like the looks. Here is my problem however. What do I do with my watercooling gear? Do I "scrap it" for a H70 or keep it and fit it in the FT02? I stay away from big heavy air coolers like the D14 since I had a Thermalright Ultra 120 years ago and it flexed my mobo (after about 2 years) to the point where the mobo stopped working properly and had to be replaced. That's when I switched to watercooling.

As you can guess, I don't change my hardware as often as some of you guys, and when I do, I get the best I can afford (I have a daughter now who gets my "toy" money) and make it last for about 3 or 4 years with small upgrades here and there (video card, hdd's / ssd upgrades).

I saw PuD's post with a watercooled setup and I'm wondering about my options.

I know this is an "air coolers case", and quite a few people use H70's due to space issues with tall ram.
I know that having the rad on the intake fans just pumps warm air into the case.
I calculated costs and a H70 is about $100 right now, or if I keep my water cooled setup, I'd install an XSPC bay res and I'd like to switch to compression fittings, adding up to about $100 also....

I have every intention to OC the new system to about 4.8ghz (as per many reviews) and it must stay quiet while doing so.

In your opinions, what should I do?
1- Buy an FT02 and run my watercooling.
2- Buy an FT02 and a H70.
3- Find another case for my watercooling setup?

EDIT: Can the H70 in the FT02 compete with a traditional watercooling setup?

As I said, I love the looks of the FT02, and it provides great cooling and silence. The only other case that I can find that I like and will fit my setup, is the new 650D from Corsair, although it's twin, the 600T does poorly in the cooling department (as do the 800D/700D).

If any of you have any suggestions or advise, please help...

i wonder who i can email at amazon.

Jeff Bezos? But really, their cases all have APs now. On the off-chance that they don't, Amazon has no restocking fee and will pay for your return shipping if you persuasively complain about the fans.

Hi guys, we are indeed evaluating USB 3.0 implmentation on both FT02/RV02 right now. There is a very good chance they will get updated. I think we can also take care of current owners by offering USB 3.0 port for sale separately out of our branch offices.

Awesome news Tony, so glad to hear we will be able to buy a port replacement separately.

Anyone else have to modify the top cover? I have a usb keyboard that uses a ps/2 adapter and it's too high. I'm going to have to cut away at some of the plastic underneath. Not the biggest deal.

Also, saw some posts about the HX850 etc. power supplies making noise in this orientation. Mine made a rattling noise but after it ran for a few days it smoothed out and I can't hear it anymore. Probably just needs a little wear on the bearings for this orientation idk.

Try finding a adapter cable from monoprice etc? That way you can lay things flat vs cutting up your case, and even gain a bit of extension on your keyboard vs the plug/socket type adapters.

Greetings Tony!

I saw a preview of the RV02White and saw that it has an extra brace between the I/O shield area and the card slot area and re-designed power/reset buttons. Will this brace be added to the FT02/RV02?

The new brace are already in place for all FT02 cases. I believe most RV02 produced in 2010 have the brace as well.

4: None of the above. Buy a ThermalTake Silver Arrow like the one pictured above. It gives lower temps AND lower noise than H70 AND costs less.

No H70 won't compete with a traditonal WC setup using seperate res\pump etc, especially if you use a larger radiator. H70 comes close to the top air coolers (currrent kings include the ThermalTake Silver Arrow and Noctua D14, H70 is a few degress behind them in temps and louder\more expensive)

The only reason to choose H70 over Silver Arrow or D14 is for space or weight issues (H70 is around 700g total, the other 2 are around 1200g total including fans)

BTW awesome setup Kisakuku :)

Can't you just plug keyboard into USB ?

And I hope you are right about HX since mine is noisiesiest component in my rig right now :(

Thanks, you should see it after I spent eight hours with cable sleeving, heat shrink, zip-ties and wire saddles. The side panels don't bulge at all. Doesn't look half bad for a first attempt at building a rig.

I even got inspired and replaced the 12cm white fan grille with the black one I took off the PSU and the white PCI slot covers with the black slotted ones. Too bad nobody can see that under the top cover, but all that matters is I know the whole thing is color-matched now. Really wish the paint job on the side panels was better though, the paint is already peeling around the thumb-screw holes despite me putting thick rubber grommets on the thumb screws.

Of course today I noticed that the AX850 PSU gives off a high-pitched whine whenever the GTX580 GPU is under load. The second I tab out of a game or close Furmark, it becomes almost inaudible. Also, I'm yet to see the fan on the PSU spin. It's not stuck, I can rotate it with a pen freely. So I guess I'm not done yet, replacing the PSU and putting in a normal PWM to VGA PWM adapter for the TY-140 fan on the Thermalright Shaman should keep me busy for a bit.

Now your fun will really begin as the Intel announcement of all the 6 series chipsets may have a potentially degrading SATA performance, you have to rip out your board at some point.

Very nicely done PuD! It looks very clean. Question though. I'm looking to do a similar set up with my ft02 when it arrives tomorrow, but I want to make sure that radiator will fit without modification to the case. In your picture above it looks like you may have changed the 5 HDD hotswap bay to fit the radiator you have.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f124/dvd0020/ft02watercooled.jpg

Here is a stock picture.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f124/dvd0020/FT02original.jpg

Wasn't sure if it just looked different because of the red color (optical illusion maybe?) I still see that there are still 5 drive bays in there, so if anything it looks like you extended it in the middle. Can you clear this up? Thanks!

Hi, thanks mate ;)
I don't have change anything about the hdd bay, is an optical illusion. The radiator I chose fits perfectly :p

Is this it? "Early Monday, Intel identified a problem with its Cougar Point chipset family affecting SATA 3 Gb/s ports, specifically. "

Well, the HDD and the future SSD are on the SATA 6G internal headers. I could re-enable the Marvell SATA 6G controller and switch the two optical drives to its two headers. Problem solved, no need to switch the mobo?

Solved. Stay with the same board until it's replaced by your OEM.

No possible way to switch it since they have been pulled from shelves.
I'm going to wait until ASUS announces a replacement plan to change my board.

By "switch" I meant replace through ASUS after the new ones are available in March/April. But hopefully, by then ASUS will let us trade up for Z68 mobos? I also have a Sabertooth P67 from Newegg sitting around. I wonder if I can get out of paying the restocking fee on that one thanks to Intel.

Ok, I see. I was one of the first to contact Newegg when the news hit. They offered a full refund with return shipping, no restocking fee.
My PC has been down for a while now and I don't feel like going through the motions again.

Good call. Called them and got the same deal. Good thing I didn't mail it this morning.

Evening all.

Completed FT02 build this evening. Turned it on, and heard one of the 180mm fans clicking, loudly.

A few seconds later, that clicking turned into an awful sound of grinding plastic.

Opened up the case, removed the fan only to find one of the fan 'fins' had broken off. Upon further inspection, there was a circular mark on the fan base, which shows clearly where the fin was hitting.

Some help would be appreciated - is it best to contact Silverstone directly in order to get a replacement fan, or to go through supplier? I'm thinking proof of purchase and some photos to Silverstone directly would be more apt.

Thanks!

Fantastic - you're at least the third person (including myself) in the last month to have experience the wonderfulness that is the self-exploding AP181 fans. You'll have to RMA them through Silverstone but you'll need a copy of your invoice otherwise they won't do anything for you. I received my FT02 for Xmas and had no invoice for it so they said I was SOL.

To this day, I always stay check the fan filters to make sure they aren't in contact with the blades.
Pull out the filter and carefully push it back in. Turning it on for the first time without checking ends in disaster as expected.

I do this with all my cases, making sure the fan blades aren't blocked by a wire, screw or filter.
Can a fan explode on it's own? Yes, but mostly likey is was already damaged. Just check em.

It wasn't the filter, it was the actual mount that the fan was attached to (the bit connected to the case with two screws). One would assume with a £175 case that the fan would function in it's own housing :)

So the blades came in contact with the fan housing? Must be a new batch of the fans that has bad QC.
I have the same fans that came with my case but that was back in August.

The mount can flex upwards into the fan if the screws are overtightened in it. I noticed this when I was taking those pieces apart back when I had an FT02.

RMA set-up for three replacements. The AP181s were the loudest things in my case by some margin (noise and vibration). Hopefully the new set will be as advertised.

Idle temps gone up just 5*C with all three lower fans turned off. Cool room however, they will do their job in the summer :)

Bit the bullet today and bought a FT02S-W today on Amazon. If the delivery estimate is correct I should have a fun project tomorrow. Gotta love Amazon Prime :)

It's pretty cool to see Silverstone taking care of rv02/ft02 owners with fan issues. I think yennedin or sushicide got denied RMA for some reason, but for the most part it looks like Silverstone is aware of the issue. Hopefully they can come up with a permanent fix in a future revision vs just doing RMAs.

I didn't have an invoice for my case so they wouldn't RMA the fan even though the case itself was only two weeks old at the time the fan blew up. Now that others have had the same problem - maybe they'll realize that I'm not blowing smoke up their arses and finally give me a different fan???

Just completed my transfer from a HAF-X to my FT02S-W.

Couple of downsides from switching have been...

1. Not enough room behind the motherboard to route all my cables. I knew this going in and knew it was going to be a challenge and it sure did prove to be one. The cables on my Corsair HX850 were not happy fitting in there.

2. my PSU's cables were not quite long enough to get to my SSD and BD-RW drives. They are pretty long cables on the Corsair PSUs so I was surprised that I would have trouble here. I used 1x Molex cable and 1x SATA Power cable as well as my 4 GPU 6 pin connectors and ended up having to route the molex cable through the main part of my case.

Other then that I think the case is amazing and can't wait to reconfigure my desk so that I can have it up off the floor.

On another note, my Asus Sabertooth X58 had enough 3 pin connectors (and they were grouped together) to put the Air Penetrators plugged directly into the motherboard.
