Resolution in-game vs desktop res

I've been playing HL2 mostly atm, and I haven't noticed much performance loss when going to 1280x1024 from 1024x768. My desktop resolution is 1280x1024, so I thought that might have impact performance. Will there be any loss, changing to a higher or lower resolution than what's on the desktop?
