Would 1080p resolution on a 27" 1440p monitor with no internal scalar look just as good as a 1080p resolution on 27" native 1080p monitor?

I am confused since a 1440p panel is physically different than a 1080p panel, even if they are the same size, I am wondering when a 1080p picture is embedded on a 1440p panel, if there will be any mushing, like one pixel worth of information, spreading over multiple pixels since the physical size of the pixel is not being changed.

Also how does the internal scalar come in to play, does it help with the issue? It does induce lag I assume.
 
if the image is to fill the entire screen, something has to scale the image, whether it's done in the display hardware, video card, or software.
 
Well if there is no internal scaler you won't be able to feed it a 1080p signal most likely (it wouldn't work at all).

That being said if its on a computer and playing 1080p video and doing scaling in the playback software (likely using GPU hardware to do) then the picture will usually look better than strait 1080p does as usually upscaled stuff looks a bit better vs watching at its native resolution but that is kind of subjective. I don't think it would be any kind of noticeably worse.
 
Technically 720p (1280x720) would look "sharper" on a 2560x1440 screen since 1440p is an even multiple and would only need pixel doubling.

1080p on a 1440p screen depends on the content and the scaler. movie and video content can look better sometimes depending on the screen's scaler. Some screens sharpen non-native resolutions too much and it adds "ringing' artifacts or accentuates "mosquito noise" and macro blocking that some sources already suffer from.

Others blur and smooth too aggressively and you loose detail.

The trick is that on most LCD screens , there is already lots of motion blur issues so many scalers do just oversharpen and hope it is passable.

If you have a good 1440p screen with a good backlight and good motion resolution, playing 1080p content on it should be better than a worse quality 1080p screen, but if both were similar quality, native content on the 1080p screen should be better.

The other issue there is the pixel size on a 27" 1080p screen is almost too large an can be cramped for desktop space.

I thing is for sure, I won't consider any 27" monitor that that isn't G-sync or at least 120Hz/144Hz at this point unless it is a 3840x2160 screen. There is just too much improvement offered to ignore if you are going to spend any good amount of time in front of a monitor.
