Resizing desktop on LCD without adjusting resolution.

I got a new Acer 17 LCD from newegg for my mother. She loves it, but its native resolution of 1280 x 1024 is just too small for her. However, setting the resolution to 1024 x 768 stretches the image and looks really blurry.
Is there a way by settings or a program that will allow the display to run at 1280x1024 but stretched to appear 1024x768? I have increased the DPI size and adjusted the icons to a comfortable size, but still some programs are too small. I want to be able tell windows to increase the size of everything by around 40% without lowering resolution.
 
well u could run it at 320x256, that wont have any distortion. or tell her to get glasses
 
You can adjust the DPI size of the font in Display Properties (Advanced) from the standard 96 DPI (small fonts) to 120 DPI (large fonts) or a custom size. This will help in most applications, but won't increase the size of buttons etc.
 
Yeah, as far as I know, the only dynamic sized things in windows are fonts and icons.
 
in display properties, u can change anything (incl. buttons and font size for labels). It will help with windows but there are plenty of programs that ignore windows settings ;)

To change those settings, got display properties -- appearance -- advanced and use drop down to adjust windows desktop :D
