I use the Media Center and recently, when I scanned for video files, it picked up some up my xvids and it does not like them. So now whenever I go to the library, media center just crashes. Anyone know how I can reset media center or remove the found libraries/files? This is driving me nuts!

Make sure you have codecs installed that can actually play the video files. I came across this issue once before, except Explorer would actually crash when trying to create thumbnails for certain video files. After installing a codec pack, the issue was resolved. When it tries to create a thumbnail, it will actually play the video file behind the scenes (or try to), and for some stupid arsed reason, if it doesn't have the proper codec, it'll try anyway and potentially crash.

All the proper codec's are installed. The video's play fine in WMP and Media Player Classic. Yet, Media center still crashes on me. It's not liking something. That's why I've been trying to figure out how to reset it to defaults. If not, I'm afraid I'll end up reinstalling Vista and I really don't feel like taking the time to do so.

I had to fix that on my neighbors vista computer. He was downloading some porn vids from limewire that were bogus. What I did was delete the vids from the folder through the command prompt. WMP worked fine after.

or if you want to keep the vids

there should be an option to remove the folders to search in the options.

I had this problem for awhile.

For me, media center did not like Divx which is what it used for playback of Divx/Xvid files even though I also had Xvid installed.

I unregistered divx so that Media Center would use the Xvid codec for playback and generating the thumbnails (no crashing), but I could still have divx installed for encoding purposes.

I made a post about it some ages ago.
