Is it required? I just bought a 680i Black Pearl on ebay EXTREMELY cheap (under 40 bucks) and I want to test out the waters with water lol. I have my blocks already since they come on the board, I have the Pump also and I'm about to purchase my radiator in the next few days. I know I need to match my fittings and my tubing and still get tubing and stuff like that but do I have to spend the money on the reservoir or will I be safe without one?
 
of course not, you can just use a T fitting and use tubing as your res. You may want to get something to plug the top of the T line with.

takes longer to bleed the system but it works fine.
 
Reservoirs do make it easier to bleed air from the system.
They provide a constant source of fluid for the pump.
A Swiftech micro-res 2.0 is generally only 20 dollars, so pretty cheap, all in all.

It is not necessary, but I sure like mine for bleeding and filling the system.
 
So I need one or the other, or possibly both? If it will really make it that much easier then I will invest in it. Any other advice you guys can give me?
 
If I were looking for a new system, I would invest in a res. Probably the swiftech one magoo mentioned if your worried about price.

and you dont need both, I mean by the time you buy the T fitting and the plug for it you could throw that money towards a swiftech res for not much more.
 
What pump do you have???
There are pump top reservoirs as well.
If you want pretty good unbiased suggestions, visit realredraider.com and ask the guys there which res they prefer, they are very knowlegable.

I still think thw Swiftech MicroRes 2.0 is the way to go if you are serious.

Tubing is a matter of personal choice. I use 3/8 ID, 1/2"OD. It's pretty flexible, bends well and is inexpensive. The fittings are generally cheaper too.:D Ask around.....some prefer 1/2 ID 3/4OD.
 
How much does it effect the flow of water? I have a Delphi Laing pump. its 3/8" so that means I have to use 3/8" on everything else right?
 
no

mag drive pumps generally benefit from less head pressure and are able to push more volume this way

i have a Danner Mag 9.5 pump on my aquarium, same type of pump just much larger, and it has a 3/4" ID output but if you pipe it with 1" or larger ID tubing it pushes considerably more water than with matching 3/4" ID tubing ;)
 
I too use 3/8 ID 1/2 OD, always prefered it to the 1/2 ID. And my pump has 1/2 connections but you can just heat up the ends of the tubing with boiling water and they slip right on.

Which model though? If you replace the top the new top may come with or give you the option of other size fittings.
 
While we're asking about reservoirs...do bigger ones help at all? I mean, I can get a dual drive bay reservoir for only 2 bucks more than a single drive bay one, but that also means more coolant needed and stuff...for...idk how much it will help.
 
I don't see how it can help much its just bigger, you shouldn't need it I don't think. You don't have to fill your res up, I think you are actually supposed to not fill it up so you can get air out of your lines that way.
 
There are any number of aftermarket tops for pumps that will allow any size tubing you want, as long as you can screw a G1/4 fitting on.

I bought a BitsPower top for my MCP655 that allowed me to not only choose the placing but the size of the fittings as well.

There have been pretty good tests done that show minimal advantage in flow rates between 3/8" and 1/2" tubing. It's more a matter of preference and cost in my book.

I don't think there is much advantage in a larger Res, unless perhaps you are feeding two pumps.
 
As sad as this sounds i use a gallon distilled water jug as my reservoir :)

HAHAHA If it works it works! I know I can't fit anything close to that in my case and I don't want it sitting on my desk and get knocked over. I will be ordering most of my stuff later this week so I'm sure I will be posting back to make sure I'm putting it all together right lol.

There's no way in hell it would fit in my case. :D It sits hidden behind the desk off to the side. No chance of ever knocking it over
 
I don't like res's, coupe reasons:

1. Louder because of the water that swishes in them.
2. The one i had was plastic and cracked.
3. I think it is just as easy to bleed a t-line, just put the line up high and it will work great.
 
I like using a reservoir. It makes filling easier, makes bleeding easier, and it looks nicer in the front of the computer.

I put another fitting on the top side of that reservoir and ran a fill port to the top of the case. I can open the fill port on top of the case and just dump in fluid as needed. It's perfect & easy. You can't hear water swishing around in mine.. it's full enough to where it doesn't do that.
