Researching laptops - which one to get

I searched around [H]ard|OCP's reviews for laptops since I'm ready to buy one. This would be the first laptop I've ever owned and I'm looking for a good stable 17" or better laptop that can handle games well (especially WOW). I looked at the review for the ABS G4 Mayhem and saw on the ABS website that they had a G5 version with a 17" widescreen. What was a little frustrating was that ABS said that it was out of stock. I was wondering of anyone could suggest other manufactures of gaming laptops.

Also I haven't the slightest idea as to what the difference is between a Centrino Mobile chip and a regular Pentum chip. What would the equivalent of a Pentium 4 3.8 GHz chip be in a Centrino or M chip? Is there an equivalent?

Thanks,

Specks

Falcon Northwest, Hypersonic, Voodoo, Sager, etc...

And as to your other question, a Pentium M is a GREAT gaming chip and consumes much less power than the P4, but it doesn't have HyperThreading, which may or may not matter to you. It performs about on par with an Athlon64 clock for clock...

When intel says "centrino", they are refering to a package of things. One of the things included in this package is the processor, which is called the Pentium M.

The pentium M is a very good processor, and runs cool. I have a Pentium M 1.5GHz which equals the performance of the Pentium 4HT 2.8GHz.

The AMD64 or Pentium M processor will be good for gaming.

How much were you looking to spend? And I'll assuming that you do not plan on having this as a really portable laptop.... right?

You might check with ABS to see if their 'out of stock' thing is temporary because of the holiday season, or if it's permanent. ABS makes a pretty good laptop, so don't eliminate them as an option while you look at the other guys.

im an AMD fan but Pentium M chips are the best that intel offers, performance is on par with those of AMD chips, i would reccomend Sager notebooks, they have very good gaming potential, but if you buy one, ALWAYS go either AMD or Pentium M, they run much cooler than P4, and have better power consumption.

Thanks for the answers guys. Much appreciated.

So what would a Intel® Pentium® M 760 2.0GHz 2MB L2 Cache 533MHz FSB (taken from the alienware site for the Area 51 m5700) be? Now having HT technology isn't that important to me. If I have done without it since it came out, I think I can do without it for a good deal longer untill I have no choice because there's nothing else. The m5700 comes with an nVidia GeForce GO 6800. So if anyone has a laptop with one of those installed I'd appreciate your views on it. I would think HL2 would be playable on this (I hope). I'm willing to spend around $2000 - $2500 on it. I'd like one that would be good enough to last me about 5 years before being forced to upgrade.
