Researching a 5.1 System

All right this is probably a different request than what is normally asked here, but I'm going to throw it out there. I'm looking to upgrade my current audio situation. Currently I'm running HDMI from either my laptop or desktop to my TV and then running analog out of the TV to a pair of M-Audio AV30s. Honestly, it isn't too bad and frankly I'm genuinely impressed by the little guys. No real bass response, but the overall clarity and audibility of speech is quite impressive for such tiny little speakers. Just being honest.

Anyway, while it works right now, but as many of you can imagine it is far from perfect. Now, the kind of sound I like is a nice clear and flat sound, a bit of hobbyist in music making :cool: So, of course I've got question in regards to all of this. I can probably figure out what to use as my fronts, but for a center and surrounds I've got no clue. I also have a lack of understanding with receivers. Not to say I don't know the difference between an AV Preamp versus an AV Receiver, but I just don't get all the damn FUD about them.

Probably the most important part is that I'm not buying yet. So, I'll be doing more research at this current time rather than purchasing. Partly because I'm broke and it takes awhile to actually get proper funds for a quality sound system. No strict budget, but I'm not looking to spend a small fortune on this. Hence, I'd be very appreciative for brands to research and possibly even forums or articles in regards to pretty much the entirety of surround sound systems. I figured I'd ask here first as this forum seems pretty good as a starting place if not a decent place to get recommendations for this kind of stuff. Thanks in advance.
 
i would offer some advice, but some idea of a budget is necessary for said advice to be useful. the only thing you mentioned thus far is your broke and you have no strict budget but don't want to spend a small fortune. so are we talking $250, $500, $1000, or more here? what exactly is your intended usage? as far as research goes, i usually go to avsforum.com, soundandvisionmag.com, hometheatermag.com, audioholics.com, and other related sites for home theater info. so that's a start.
 
Okay, sorry for that I'm a bit tired. Budget is going to be multi faceted. That is to say I'm probably not going to purchase this all in one go. But all together I think I'd be looking at $2,500 to $5,000. Because the way I see is like this. A quality receiver from what I've seen through basic research is about $500 to $1k. From there looking at the cost of the individual components (mind you quick research) reveals about the same. So, I figure with that kind of budget in mind I should be set for a quality system.

As for usage something I completely forgot about :eek: I watch a lot of movies and play many a game on my PC and I have some Xbox 360 games I enjoy as well. Music would have to be decent on them as well, but basically they'd be used for multimedia.

I also, thank you for the recommended sites. I'll definitely be visiting them tomorrow as I'm freaking exhausted right now.
