After suffering for three long years on a Dell PIII 866, I am finally moving up in the world. Soon, I’m going to build something like what’s below. It’s gone and gotten kinda expensive though, so any suggestions on where to cut some costs will be greatly appreciated. Without further ado, here’s the set up I’m looking at:

$230 MOBO = ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe, zipzoomfly

215 CPU = AMD Athlon 64 3200+512KBL2, newegg

13 paste = Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste goo, newegg

57 heatsink = Zalman CNPS7700-Cu, newegg

250 RAM = Corsair TwinX 1024-3200XL, newegg

207 HDD = x2 WD800JD + x1 WD400JD, newegg

215 GPU = GeForce 6600GT

25 NIC

80 double layer burner


I’ve pretty much decided I want the above for sure. I need help finding a PSU and a case. So far, I’m looking at:


$ 97 PSU = OCZ Modstream 450, newegg

140 case = Thermaltake Xaser III V1000D, newegg


I really don’t know what I need for a PSU, I’m guessing the one I have listed is a bit overkill. I do want to do some oc’ing and I will be adding new components occasionally – a faster CPU, second 6600GT, and more RAM, as my budget allows.

Here’s what I want in a case. A see-through window, at least 5 internal 3.5” bays, a temp display, and the fan speed controllers (like the 4 on the Xaser III). So, did I find the case that satisfies my every desire, am I buying a cheap (for $140???) gimmick, or is there another case that has everything I want for lots less $$$.
 
I would get better memory. The Corsair PC3200XL doesn't overclock as well as some of the others with Samsung TCCD chips. I would suggest OCZ PC3200 Platinum Rev2, PDP PC3200 w/ XBL, Crucial Ballistix PC3200 or PQI Turbo PC3200.

As far as the power supply goes your going to want a beefy 12V rail because thats whats most important. The OCZ Modstream 450w has i believe 26A on the 12V rail which should be enough for overclocking and a SLI config of 6600GT's but i'm not for sure how much power two 6600GT's will draw at load.

If your getting a Thermaltake i'd get the Tsunami or the Shark. The Tsunami looks the best but the Shark has more room because its a full tower.
 
hell you could get some pc-4400 for $250 personally I would go 754 as it will save you a hundred+$ and still oc's nice get an xp-120 with a blue led fan oooohhh. and use some of you saved money to buy 2 of these for like $10 more and you have 2x the capacity of the other two. that or buy 2x120 or 160'x and a raptor

I wouldn't invest in socket 754. It wont save you all that much and AMD's production line is fixed on socket 939 now. AMD even says that the new dual core A64's will be compatible with socket 939 motherboards. Socket 939 Athlon 64's also have a dual channel controller like the FX so you have increased bandwidth.
 
I have a xaser to describe it I would use one word heavy if your not luggin it around it terrific. however I stick my hands in the case and they always always come out bleeding. not even sure from where I cut myself
 
Antec Performance One = nice case :D
don't know about how heavy it is, though... i just PLAN on owning one. It's not that expensive either. Check it out on Antec's website or google any of its reviews.

I agree with socket 939, though. That's the future of AMD's platform, so getting a socket 754 now, would be a dead end in future upgradability. Damn the 939's prices though.
 
Antec Performance's case is not bad at all. It's actually good for building a computer up. Easy to get one up quick. I've built one on it and it was not too heavy nor too light (or maybe I'm just too used to it?).
