I currently have a 19" and just about to purchase a 20" monitor.
Then I read somewhere that a 20" widescreen is about the (vertical height) size of a 17" monitor.

I'm not sure if going shorter and wider will be better than my current 19".
I got a chance for this upgrade so my debate is...

Go with a Dell 1907 or
Wide with Dell 2007FWP

(maybe I should throw the 20" square to the mix?)

So, does anyone have any pic of a 19" next to a 20" wide?
I'm curious how much smaller it really is.

Thanks.

I have been wondering the same thing. I am very close to buying the Dell 1907FP, but I have seem amazing pictures of widescreen lcds and am wondering if I should invest in one of them. A pic of a 19" and 20" widescreen LCD would help out me a lot too. Anyone with pics or thoughts about which one is better would help out me too. Thanks

Here you go....
I took this pic when i was researching on what monitor to buy....

This is the beautiful Viewsonic VX2025MW (that i am now a proud owner of) next to the Samsung 970P

The only reason the 20.1" monitors are alittle bit narrower, is just because the pixels are smaller (better quality)..... the 20.1" are 1650x1050 versus 19" 1280x1024

technically the you get 26 more lines than the 19"
I hope i have manged to answer your question :)

Thanks for the pic.

So you're saying that even though the 19 is larger (physically) the 20" widesceen can actually display more space because of the resolution.
Never thought about it that way.
I guess it would make it look like it's larger because the amount of info you can fit on the screen.

So, has anyone "felt" the 20" wide was smaller and wished they went (or stayed) with a 19"?

any side by side pics (like, I mean, next to each other)?

i also own a vx2025wm.. although i have never compared them side by side, ive used a regular 19" lcd on many occasions, and i can honestly tell you the 20.1" just feel more comfortable. dont know how else to describe it...it's just hard to go back to a 19" after getting used to a 20.1". and everyone i know who did the upgrade from 19" -> 20.1" feels the same way and have no regrets..

Ya 19" share the same resolution as 17" (1280x1024).... they did that by increasing the size of the pixels...

i have owned a 19" widescreen (1440x900).... now that compared to a 19" seemed VERY small...... and i felt like i wanted bigger (it was the Samsung 940MW)... having gotten a refund for it... because the screen buzzed... and it had NASTY viewing angles (even though they claimed it was 160/160).... you can find my review of it, if you do a search here....

But the 20.1" widescreen... is the best of both worlds... :)

heheh that viewsonic looks like it has a raidant glow around it's widescreen goodness :)

i cant wait til i get mine o_O

^^^ yeah my viewsonic just hit Miami Customs and maybeeeeee will be in my hands by saturday!!!! Screw dell and thier crap banding issues i am sure they will never fix.

The Samsung looks bigger in that picture but up close the 20.1" widescreen is huge.

When I visit my son and use his 19" LCD for a few days, I can't wait to get back to my Dell 2005FPW. The widescreen is so much more natural. Plus, like they said, the dot pitch on a 19" LCD is kind of high.

Same for a regular 20" or 21" monitor. They're too tall and the aspect ratio doesn't look right. Kind of like a TV, who would buy a regular TV after you've spent time with a widescreen TV.

As for a 19" widescreen, I think they use a 1440x900 resolution which again makes for a high dot pitch. Might as well pop the extra cash for a 20.1".

I'll only upgrade my baby when she blows up. Then I might go for a 23" or 24" widescreen, or maybe I'll get a 1080p TV and use my computer from the couch. How cool would that be.

Thanks for all the info.

Now I feel better from going to my 19" to a 20" WS.
Now, if only there weren't so many complaints about the Dell...
I can only go Dell (well, preferred), because of a business account.
The thing is I have a Planar now so I'm pretty sure that even with these issues with the 20" dell, it will probably be better than my current monitor.

Will have to make a decision by end of day today.

went from 19" to a 20.1" WS just recently and found the thing too small. kind of a pain readin pages which involve a lot of vertical scrolling. going to give a 21" WS a shot, but most likely a 20" Non-WS

A 19in monitor has a resolution of 1280x1024 and widescreen 20in has a resolution of 1680x1050. The vertical resolution of the two monitors is nearly identical, so they both display the same amount of webpage vertically. It is your mind playing tricks on you.

Ross

PS If you can rotate the 20in monitor, then you will have a lot more vertical resolution for some serious webpage action.

get a 24" widescreen. I have dual 20" regulars, and I really want a widescreen, but don't want to lose the vertical height.

my friend has a 19" Sammy Syncmaster lcd an i have a dell 2005fpw. Mines a lot bigger, i mean a lot bigger, has a much higher native resolution. id get a 20" or if you can afford a dell 2405 is a sweet monitor as well. id stay away from the 07 series though.

And about the height thing. My dell 2005fpw is taller than his 19" lcd and its way wider as you would imagine

How is yours be taller ?!?! I'm guessing his 19" is in the 4:3 aspect ratio.

These are the specs of the Dell 1907FP and 2007WFP
1907FP: 11.9 X 14.8
2007WFP: 10.7 X 17

The 19" is clearly taller, by 1.2 inches.

I thought "taller" was about the screen sizes of the two, 19" 4:3 and 20 widescreen (16:10?), since that seems to be the point of the post, at least that is how I take it. Sorry
