Hey All,
Has anyone tried these in a 'real' (i.e. no test, or review labs) environmens, to see how they would perform? I bought a 74GB Raptor (00FLC0), a month before the launch of Raptor X and think I should have waited for the new model.

Thanks for all your insights and comments in advance.

the raptor x is basically a rip off imo. Just get the server edition(exact same specs, diffferent packaging), unless your made of money.

Be careful about using the server edition, as its TLER features make data recovery more difficult than with the gamer's edition. Then again, the superior MTBF may offset this shortcoming.

According to Storage Review (and others), TLER is dissabled by default and has to be enabled with a separate utility (which doesn't even appear to be available yet).

I think the window is really cool, but I doubt I'll ever have a case to show it off appropriately.

I would have been perfectly happy to stay with my 74GB raptors, but I found a good deal and decided to upgrade anyway.

Not impressive results with new raptors, the "older" one is pretty much still in charge.

Are we reading the same article? The 150 Raptor wins nearly every test.

Now, I agree that it might not be fast enough to justify upgrading from a 74 (especially the FLC0), but it is still a noticable improvement.

Also, for more "real world" results, look at Storage Review's website where they confirm that the 150 is the fastest single-user, allaround, SATA device available.

My point exactly.

In my new planned rig, I'm thinking of just running the vanilla 150GB raptor (no window...who's gonna see it?) as my OS/high-end apps (adobe, macromedia)/heavily played games drive, with a bunch of WD 400gb drives, as in a month or so, hopefully prices have dropped on all of 'em.

Most people label them as such, yes.

"Server" edition is a bit misleading. They are both functionally the same and default set to benefit a single-user desktop platform.

IIf you need more space than 74gb, then go for it. Otherwise, at this point, there isn't much of a compelling arguement to upgrade if you already have a 74.

EDIT: Nevermind, just saw where they are now shipping and ORDERED MINE!

The WINDOW version ????

I've been waiting on this for so LOOOOONG.

I'm putting it in this so the window does matter to me:

Just curious and don't mean to hijack the thread or anything. If I were to order the Raptor 74, Am I pretty much going to get the FLC0, or is there a chance of still getting an older version? I'm thinking I will take the plunge for one of these :D

The FLC0 has been out for a few months now, so the retail channels should be saturated. I wouldn't worry about it.

TLER can be turned on or off with a software program or something. That is what I have heard.

You mean to say that you will be looking at your computer everytime when using your computer?

How about the cooling in the tower case?

The Raptor X has a clear window on the top of the case right? Or is it the whole hard disk is a clear case? If it is only on the top then how can one see if it is a Raptor X or Raptor 150 once it is installed in the tower case?

Raptor 150 or Raptor X is a good purchase for those who don't own a Raptor hard disk yet. Guys with Raptor 74GB should just stick with their current hard disk and wait for the Serial ATA II model.

I don't see the logic in that. The decision, at least in my case, would be based on whether you need the additional space, not whether you have one or not. Besides, we don't even know when the N. America release will be for the 740ADFD

Yes. I display my current clear case system on top of my desk with the side facing toward me.

I just received my Raptor X about an hour ago and it is spiffy. :)

I will be mounting it on the side of the case much like the C3 case that is the Official Case for Raptor X on their site. I'm having to have a special mounting bracket made though.

Cooling isn't an issue because it will be a water-cooled system as is my current system. If the Raptor runs too hot, I'll get a bottom mounted water-cooling block for it.

I'm still testing mounting all the parts and marking it up for custom cutting by a local platics house atm.

I don't have one of the window ones but my 150 is fast. Damned fast. But it is also my first Raptor so I have no frame of reference. It does leave my old 80Gb Caviar SE in the dust.
