Replacing Win2k3 server with external storage

One of our locations has 8 pc's. There is a Win2k3 domain server here also. Only 4 of the PC's are on the domain. File performance has been terribly slow the last couple weeks and it's not the network. I'd like to rip the server out and replace it with a decent external drive solution. I'm still not sure if I want to use the external drive as the file server to house their documents and outlook pst files though. Or just use it as a backup drive for their information that is stored on the local PC.

My thoughts right now are to just use the external drive as a backup device and put backup software on each computer. None of the domain features are necessary.

Thoughts / opinions?
