yah I'm a laptop idiot...my brother has a 2.4ghz p4 and decent ram, but can hardly play anything made after 2003 on his radeon7000. Is there any way to replace a laptop video card? I'm looking to do this myself.
 
I dont think anything except the MXM or Axiom laptops can do this. MXM and Axiom are nVidia and ATi, respectively, and they are basically mini-PCI-e ports within DTR (usually) notebooks.
 
yah, i just saw that after i posted...darn. Brother will be waiting until next summer when I help him build a desktop.
 
Alienware tried it with the 5600 - 5700 laptop video, and the 9600 - 9700 video chips.

They managed to get an Nvidia solution that worked, but they never got an ATI solution. They basicly lied to everyone that bought a 9600 video card in one of their laptops with Alienware's upgrade advertising.
 
Well, if the laptop model was offered with alternate video processors, you might, somehow, be able to score a video unit. I don't think Dell is going to sell you one for anything resembling an affordable price, tho. You could try checking eBay.
