Hi All,

After running an AMD dual core NT06 system for a couple of years, its upgrade time. Firstly I dearly love my sg01 and since pulling it apart for even a small amount of time isn't an option a full replacement is now required. So this is the intended spec.. but the question is am I expecting too much of a SFF box.

1) Case - Sugo again but probably the SG02-F. Why - because its a "perfect" size for its location and I like the current sugo look much more than the other SFF's on the market.

2) Quad Intel Q9450 - Big change for me having been an AMD fan for the last couple of generations (intel prior to that) - but intel seem to have the edge over the phenoms by all accounts

3) Motherboard - Probably the Asus P5E-VM HDMI iG35 but I'd be interested in other recommendations - Just about used most of the common motherboard manufacturers in the past but am so much out of touch I'm not convinced which way to go.

4) Nvidia - likely to be a 8800 or 9800 range - again recommendations especially in this box regarding heat would be welcome...

5) Memory - probably 4GB of something that works well on chosen mb.

6) HD - likely to be something reasonably small - possibly raptor - although I'm not sure how noisy these are compared to my current Seagate 7200.10. Would love to go SSD but the prices are still just silly money.

7) DVD - nothing special

8) Cooling - would like to stick with Enermax / NT06 combo if this will keep everything cool enough...probably with 3 Noctua 80mm fans


So onto the questions

1) Is anybody running a q9450 in a sugo 01/02 and if so are your temperatures okay?
2) Would actively cooling be a solution if the NT06 won't cope? If so any recommendations on something that works well and would fit in here?
3) Recommendations on 8800 / 9800 re which runs cooler / quieter (I'm assuming both will fit in a 02-F which has better clearance than the 01)

If I were you I would wait till after the 25th of this month to see what both ATi/Nvidia are offering in terms of performance with the HD4000/GTX 200's series of cards.

The 4gb (2x 2gb) Gskill Pc8000 is currently the most popular and best deal on ram at the moment @ $85.

Newegg is also running a special on the 640GB Western Digital HDD for $99 w/ free shipping.

Those are two things you can look at, other than that, the Asus P5E-VM is an awesome motherboard, and Silverstone released a NT06-Evolution heatsink that's basically just a beefed up NT06 made for CPU's with a 130w TDP. You may really want to invest in that if you're thinking of running the quad. Newegg didn't have them in stock last time I checked, but performance-pc's did for around $50. Goodluck, and let's see some pictures when you get this all up and running. :D

I just sold off my Qmicra v1, and am building a similar setup with an SG01, as it's always been the best looking SFF chasis in my eyes. I'm going with 3 x 80MM Noctua's as well, and I'm gonna line the inside of the case with Akasa Sound Proofing material.

I'd assume that the NT06 wouldn't be quite as strong as you'd like for the Q9450. I plan on replacing the fan in my Corsair 620w with a 1300RPM Noctua.

With the NT-06, many people have wedged a 120mm fan underneath, blowing up, rather than on top blowing down. You might like to experiment with this.

Graphics - the speed of launch of new graphics cards these days never ceases to amaze - it doesn't seem 5 minutes since the 9 series was launched. Given the closeness of the dates I think I will wait to see what is on offer here. A little bit worried about the heat signature on one of those beasts looking at the unoffical specs but if nothing else its bound to have a price dropping impact on the "old" releases :)

I had no idea about the new NT06-E and it certainly looks great. Unfortuately it doesn't appear to have hit UK shores yet so I'm now desperate hunting for any sign of a release date over here as this may well influence my purchase date.

It appears on paper that this should handle the Q9450 (@95W?) since it is spec'd to 130W. I really don't know much about the thermal properties of chips thou so this could be totally wrong. If this is the case then its all about getting the heat out of the system so I may well look at moving from a 12cm to 13.5cm psu - guess I need to pull my exisiting sugo apart for an evening and do some measuring as I know the gap between the dvd and psu was fairly small.
I'm also pondering the fan setup and whether to set these all to push / pull or a combination of the two. Not something I had to worry too much about with my current setup.

With the positive comments on the asus board, this is now my mb of choice.

I'm also going to look at the Gskill memory as this is a name that keeps cropping up in my quest. As usual its nearly double the price in the UK at around £77.

I did think about looking to put an 80mm fan under my existing AMD 4800+ NT06 setup but in the end the temperatures were fine so I opted for a slightly quieter solution.
 
the 8 series is nearly 2 years old and the 9 series shares chips with the 8 series and is no big change. thats hardly the blistering pace it once was. the upcoming D10U's however will be a major change.
