Replacing sound card?

So right now I have an extremely old Audigy 2 value sound card that I swear I have had since 1999... haha Anyhow, I am assuming that sound card hardware is MUCH better than what I have now.

So my question is that. Will I see a noticeable difference in sound quality if I upgrade to an asus soundcard or the like and outputting to my reciever? My logic is that it is the first passthrough for the sound so therefore it is the most important?

Trying to stay away from creative.
 
If you use digital out from onboard (assuming you have a fairly modern motherboard with Realtek HD onboard and digital out)... you really don't need a card, and you'll get better quality than from the Audigy 2.
