Replacing my 6950

Hi everyone, this is my first post on HOCP! Even though I've been following the site since like 10, 12 years ago.

Just wanted to ask if it's worthwhile upgrading my 6950 (unlocked to 6970) right now?

Cuz there's a real good deal on the Asus Striker GTX 770 4GB right now, costs the same or less than any other 770's out there, plus it's only like $50 more than a GTX 760.

Should I go for it, continue with AMD for Mantle, or rough it out till the 800 series come?

Seems like it's worth at least waiting to see what the 800 series looks like since we're this close. Might push down price some of the last gen cards a little if you're buying new.

Question is what games do you play? Do you really need the upgrade now? If not, why not wait and see what the next generation beholds. If you are really struggling playing a game because its playing @ 20 fps on the settings you want, and you found a good deal, I'd jump on it. Technology will always improve; every month some new product will come out and make it look last gen.

If you have keep the 6950 this long then buying something new really kills the value of what you did.. better to pick up a used 7950/70 or 290 on ebay for dirt cheap as you earned the upgrade .

I went from a 6950 to a 7870, not the most worthwhile upgrade but I figured for the price and where I was financially it was worth a shot. I then realized...I don't play many games right now that require a stronger card.

So like OP, I finally decided to wait. I like AMD just because I used it for 3 cards and had a phenom II x4 chip. I recently grabbed an i5 Devils Canyon as an upgrade. If the 800 series looks awesome, low temp, fast, decent price then I am willing to go that route.
For now all I play is, Dota 2, Outlast, 7 Days to Die and on stand by I have Just Cause 2, maybe Destiny pending what people think of it and anything else that comes along.

To the OP: I say wait, worst that happens is the prices drop on the 280x which I've read currently is the best performance/price ratio. If the 800 series impresses you, treat yourself and your set for another 3-4 years based on you having the 6950 still. Just consider your urgency and budget.

Wait. You're at the cusp of 2 new releases. By Christmas there will be solid reviews on the AMD follow-on cards and Nvidia should have released their new series (Sept. 19th release date for at least one of the cards).

Thanks all, for your replies. Seems like that's the reason why the price of this card is so low? But if that's the case shouldn't most, if not all, of the same chipset cards be lower priced as well? In fact the price of the MSI 2GB 770 just went up by a few dollars!

As for games.. Well I actually play less these recent weeks, due to the fact we just got our own place and are in the midst of renovations. Once I have more time I probably would play more, but overall I'm playing Diablo 3 80% of the time now.

Think I left out an important bit - I'm looking to upgrade my card for 1440p gaming. Already got my Qnix 27 incher, running 96Hz flawlessly without skipping/tearing. I'm not maxing out the details on Diablo 3 currently. I used to, on my 23 incher.

Once I've moved into the new place, I intend to build an mATX system on the FT-03, and should be retaining most of my stuff right now (2500K @ 4.5Ghz, 16GB ram, 256GB SSD). Only the case and motherboard would be changed.

It's just that the Striker 4GB looks like a sweet deal to me right now.

Just for updates: Seems like Amazon made an error on the listing  It's been changed to a GTX 760!
