Replacing MoBo

So my new eVGA MoBo is here to replace my ASRock MoBo that up and died.

Can I just replace the MoBo and plug everything in and then after it is up and running install the new eVGA drivers?

I'm lazy (well, not really, but my day is busy enough to not allow me the time to do a complete re-install of WinXP).

Thoughts?

Give it a shot, I've done it before. Other than a restart or two right off the bat usually, you probably won't have any problems. Once you uninstall old drivers and install new ones, you should be just fine.

I would probably recommend booting into safe mode first, uninstalling all your old drivers (at least for network, sound etc), at least the ones you know that changed. That may save some initial troubles as well before trying a full first regular boot. ;) Most important thing is make sure your HD's are set up the same way....that's the only place I've noticed trouble. Make sure the new board has the same SATA settings (IDE mode, AHCI or RAID or whatever your old board was set to). Hopefully since they're both x58 and therefore the same chipset, you shouldn't have any troubles there (and that's usually the main culprit).

I've had mixed results swapping stuff like that. I'm guessing though that even though the boards are different, the hardware(chipset being the same) is similar enough that XP won't bluescreen on booting.

I've had this happen with images at work where the Intel chipset was different even though the pc model was the same. You'll know right away as soon as Windows starts to load...it'll blue screen when trying to load some of the drivers.

If it were me, I'd give it a try since it won't hurt anything.

thanks for the info guys. I'll get started here in an hour. Crossing fingers :D

If you were running Windows 7 I'd say not a problem. XP is another beast tho. You might squeak by since you aren't changing chipsets, but the other devices like LAN and stuff like that might cause XP to throw a fit and BSOD.

Like the others have indicated it is a mixed bag swapping mobos on Windows. Back up your data first.

If it does blue screen. You can also do a automated repair from the XP disk.

Once you boot from the XP disc and it asks if you want to install XP hit enter. It will then look for previous installations and ask you what you want to do. I think one selection is R for repair. This will then re-install all the system files, and should get you where you need to be.

It will work, its the same chipset.
Just make sure you set IDE/AHCI to whatever you have now.

Didn't get a chance to work on it today as I was slammed with work. My wife is going shopping tomorrow so I will have several hours to work on it.

The biggest problem I have is I don't remember if it is IDE or AHCI :(

I'm going to try one way and if it doesn't work, I'll try the other way.

Prime opportunity to bounce on up to win 7. It installs much faster :)

nnnooooo bad idea.. do not do that repair.. ya might as well just format the entire drive and reinstall windows...

above is the how too guide to repair windows system files without damaging all your files on the drive.. it will just uninstall and reinstall all the system files..

as far as board swapping.. as long as the chipsets are the same everything should swap just fine in xp/vista/7.. its only when you change chipsets say between intel and nvidia or amd and nvidia, etc, etc.. then windows freaks out..

Win7 seems to be really forgiving on this. I swapped a HDD from an AMD system to an Intel system a while ago, and I think it took two reboots to install the drivers for the new hardware, but I did not need to reinstall to OS. Win2K was about the same back in the day.

yeah it is.. though where it freaks out and i cant figure out why is going from AMD to nvidia.. for some reason windows just doesnt like being switched from another chipset to a nvidia chipset..

My AMD board was an AMD 780G chipset and I went to an X58 Intel chipset with no issues. I have never tried with an nVidia. I have also gone X58 to X58 and X58 to 5520 without a problem.

I have dont it many times over the years and it worked fine. thought sometimes it loses that sharpness a new install gives.

After a little trial and error, the box is up and running.

I did not have to do a re-install of the OS and it just pulled down a P2686 so we are off and running.

I need to work on the OC, but I'll do that next weekend. As long as it is stable, I'm happy with the PpD that it'll put out.
