replacing broken laptop screen with higher resolution

I got a Gateway nv55s02u with a broken screen for free. The original resolution is 1366x768 which seems kinda low for a 15" laptop. Can I buy a 15.6" 1080p screen instead and everything work correctly? Or does it need to be an exact match?

The data lines for higher res probably wont be present.
Also the LCD controller might not pick up a different display correctly.

If someone has already done it and you buy the same screen, and you trust the seller of the new screen, go for it.
Otherwise, not worth the risk.

Plug a monitor into the display connector instead.
