Is it necessary to revert your current CPU to stock settings before replacing it with a new one?

i'm going e2160 to Q9650
 
Most boards should detect that you've changed CPUs and revert BIOS to default settings.


EDIT: I guess I should clarify. While most boards should revert BIOS settings, you never know if they actually will. It's definitely best to manually set to default yourself before changing CPUs.

It is the motherboard that you should change back to default settings before changing CPUs.

CPUs don't really store settings on themselves like that.

Actually, they sort of do. They tell the BIOS what multiplier, FSB, and voltage is uses. And the BIOS programs the chipset to those settings unless you're overclocking.

yes just default your bios before changing CPU's.. its just smart practice.. and yes some boards do automaticly default them when it detects a new processor.. but not all of them do..
 
Yeah definitly reset bios back to stock, Here's a good educational story.

Once a great galaxy ago I had a wicked q6600 that would do 3950-4000mhz on air, only thing about her was she needed a good dose of 1.55-1.60 volts to crank that high. I picked up a spanking sweet q9550 45nm quad, now every knows that you should never push above 1.4-1.45 max volts to those 45nm chips. Stupid me figured when i booted up with the new cpu that the bios would figure it out and revert back to defualt settings, figure It has on every other cpu swap. BOY WAS I WRONG, I went into the bios and checked temps to see 72*celcius at idle and sweat started to poor off me forehead. I hurried up and shut it down and cleared the cmos and crossed my fingers did a little voodoo dance and cpu is working to this day thank goodness. So the q9550 took a dose of 1.6v on air and lived to run happily since but that was scariest hardware problem other than a couple of blind flash projects while testing out different video card bios swaps.

CLEAR THE CMOS FTW!!!!!!!!
 
Easy way is to take out/in battery(if u have one) on mobo. Another easy way is to just rest to default on bios menu

Why would you take the battery out? Just move the CMOS reset jumper temporarily and be done with it.
 
I don't know, but to be safe, I loaded defaults before changing out a Q6600 for a Q9650. No problems.

because its easier to reach in remove the battery for 30 seconds and put it back in then it is to fiddle around trying to find the jumper to reset the bios.. duh.. :p
 
I use Hiren's boot CD before to clear the CMOs. Really helpful for a laptop with a password on the bios that no one can remember.
