Hi guys,

What is the procedure for replacing a failed HDD in a raid setup? I have read a lot about the various RAID levels and their attributes, but I am still not sure what the process would be like replacing a drive.

My impression is:

1) HDD fails
2) Continue to operate at risk for short period of time
3) Physically swap in new HDD
4) Integrate new HDD into array and restore data redundency.
5) Process complete!

Is this correct? Are there specific programs to run?

You are describing how the process ought to work. I think that it's a good idea to give it a try when you had your array set up initially, so that you know it actually works.

That is how it generally works. Hell you can get hot swap bays and not take the system down. You can also have what is known as a hot spare where if a drive goes down it rebuilds the array using it.
