Replacing 6950 Fans

One of the fans on my Sapphire 6950 2g dual fan (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102945) started wobbling and catching the heatsink. I figured I'd just RMA it, but I've so far read horrible things about the Sapphire 3rd party RMA process. Aftermarket HSFs cost $40+ and take up a lot of room. Soooo... I decided to go a different route.

I pulled off the plastic cladding and fans, found out an 80mm case fan (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811999162) fits perfectly (have to press it in, not just floating) in the old fan cutout, and stuck it in there for giggles. Turns out it works amazingly well. With the old cladding and fans at 100% (very loud) and having the card at 100% load, 930MHz core, and 1250MHz RAM I was at 76'C. With the same settings, no cladding, and only ONE fan I'm at 77'C. Needless to say I'm speechless.

I'm planning on getting some Scythes or Panaflos to put in both slots and then zip-tieing them into place just to make sure they stay. It seems like a very simple solution to a relatively common issue (cheap and loud fans on video cards).

Anyone have a similar experience or know a good, maybe slim, model of 80mm fan to use?

TLDR: Replace stock cladding and fans with simple 80mm case fan. Everything is better than expected.
 
I have the same problem of messed up fans with 3 5830s. I'd be very interested in knowing, too!

i wonder if sapphire would just send you a replacement fan for warranty?
