Replacing 4870x2 thermal paste?

I read in a thread here which I now cannot find that it's very helpful for this monster's heat to replace the thermal paste. Anyone know how difficult this is? Is it fairly simple to remove the cooling unit, i.e. just a few screws and pull or slide it off to get to the guts, or is it a lengthy, complicated process?
 
It's pretty simple.

But make sure you use NON CONDUCTIVE paste. Something like AS MX-2

Oh, and not to nitpick, but non-conductive would mean that it's an insulator and prevents any heat from passing between the GPU and heatsink.
 
non conductive would mean that it does not conduct electricity... The AS 5 is conductive. performance-wise the MX-2 is as good as the AS5 (some say its better) and without the burn in period of 200 hrs.

AS5 has more of a capacitance quality than it does conductive. As long as you dont pile it on it would be safe to use on the GPU. I have been useing it on video cards, North/South bridge and CPUs for a long time now and never had any issues

Unless you have a seating problem with the current heatsink I would just let it be, the small benifit you will get from AS5 is not worth damaging your card from a mishap.
 
Any good quality TIM would be fine just don't go overboard with it and blob it on and have it spead all over the place (like some manufacturers do...).

Don't forget we have thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity...
