So I like the 360 controller in the fact that Windows and a large majority of games pick up on it automatically / show the proper buttons when using it.

However, the D-pad is horrible.

Recently I've been playing through Rogue Legacy and the 360 d-pad is making it an exercise in frustration. So question is, are there any 3rd party (preferably wired) 360 controllers that actually have a decent d-pad?

Honestly I'd prefer to just use a PS2 controller but they just show up as a generic controller in most games. That and my PS2 to USB converter is almost dead, here's to hoping they still make them.

As others have said, if you get a Dual Shock 3 controller it can be configured to appear as an X360 pad (ie as an Xinput joypad). if you have the right software. MotionInJoy drivers are one option, but there are others as well. http://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-XInput-Wrapper-for-DS3-and-Play-com-USB-Dual-DS2-Controller - is a good option.

I'd also look into the Logitech F710 and F510 (wireless, wired). These are "Playstation" shaped but have the option to act as an XInput (ie auto-detected X360 controller) controller as well as DirectInput (ie Map keyboard keys to it) controller.

For a 3rd party X360 controller, though I rarely suggest Razer, the Razer Onza TE is a great option (EDIT: I am told they have released a new controller, called the Sabertooth. Haven't used it personally,) and has a completely different Dpad style (4 discrete buttons) that many enjoy.
