Lets say I had 200 dollars give or take 50. What card would you get. Dosnt matter ati or nvidia. I was thinking a 6600GT agp card. Is that an upgrade? If your reading my sig this is for my wifes computer!

6600GT is an upgrade, yes. It kills the 9800PRO. I would personally go for a 6800NU if you can find one for $250.

I'd go with a 6800OC.

I agree if you need an AGP card.
He did say it was a replacement for his wife's card, so we can conclude that everything else in the setup will remain the same.

BTW, what is wrond with the 9700Pro you are replacing?

I have a bfg 6800 ultra oc in mine, i wanted to up the video so i can play or friends can play on that machine. mostly WoW (world of warcraft)

shouldn't the 9700pro be fine? 1280x960 max quality and some aa and af if needed?

...yea thats what I was thinking...

Unless your getting like a 6800GT or X800 Pro and up its a waste of money trying to replace the 9700 Pro with anything else...

So what you get a 6600GT or 6800nu, now your playing at 1280x960 with 4xaa and 2xaf instead of 1280x960 with 2xaa and no af? I dunno I just think with 200 dollars you should invest in maybe some memory or something. Maybe you could give us your wifes pc specs? Heck for all I know a 6800GT could be overkill for your wifes pc but without specs I dont think anybody can give you a honest opinion

fair question demon. her specs are as follows:

3.06 P4 533 FSB HT (just bought this morning) had a P4 2.4 with NO HT
1 gig of crucial 2700
Asus P4PE-L mobo
Windows XP
thermaltake 420 watt ps (not sure anymore of model)
it does have a gig ethernet card (not really important here tho)

Yea, you see with those specs I stand corrected with making the suggestion on getting memory instead.

Id try and get a 6800NU if you really have these urgent need or wanting to get a new video card, however I would urge you to save up just a bit more for a X800 Pro or a 6800GT.

What kind of games does she play btw? For all I know a 6800nu could be more than enough for what she wants.

I would say find a good deal for the 6800nu...I have seen deals going for $200....

I play WoW. more or less so friends can play games with me when they visit 1942 mod, HL2, joint ops, and all games really. also the machine is used for the server at lan parties. I know gpu isnt important regarding lan parties tho.

Yea then id try to find a cheap 6800nu or just stick with that 9700 Pro. Heck to be completely honest b/c its the Lan server I would have suggested raptor hard drives rather than a new video card.

thats just my 2 cents though

personally I wouldn't upgrade. As someone said, it's not worth it unless you get something a hell of a lot faster. The 6600GT isn't a lot faster, and the 6800nu isn't a "hell of a lot" faster. 6800GT, but nothing lower. Personally I'd keep the 9800. It's a great card. My friend got a Falcon(pitiful, I know) with a 3.6GHz P4(of all things for $5000......) and a 6800 ULTRA (no SLI). Anyways, they had a 9700pro in their old box (tualatin-S 1.26) and pretty much said I could have it.

WoW won't change a bit with a new card. I changed my 9700pro for a 6800GT and o/c to ultra and WoW has not changed one iota. 3D heavy games with lots of lighting like Doom3 and FarCry are smoother, but not WoW at all. Unfortunately i think the 2D part on the ATI cards is better than on the nVidia cards, so i lost some image quality in 2D on the way...

This all on a non processor limited resolution/CPU combo (3.25GHZ P4 [2.6 with 250FSB] and 1GB mem)
