hey all
so with my recent upgrades the little lady got the idea that she would like to upgrade as well, we are going to attempt to unlock her 2500 but that still leaves the question of the video card upgrade. i haven't been following upgrades as much as i should as a tech so i'm not sure what a decent upgrade would be. i'm not looking to spend a lot, so i'm looking for a mid card that would at least be a worthwhile upgrade from the ti4600. i'm just looking to get some ideas for this build and my future budget gaming rigs what would be good choices, and i don't mind doing unlocking or soft mods if i can buy a cheaper model and get something better ;) any ideas would rock
 
how much you wanna spend and do you want to stay with Nvidia? list your system specs to please.
 
I went from a Ti 4200 to a 6800GT and the difference is incredible. I highly suggest it. AGP 6800GT's run about 300 bucks. You could risk it and get a 6800nu for about 225-250 and have the potential to unlock the extra pipes, but you may not.....and you're still stuck with junky old DDR vram instead of GDDR3 :D .

I'd say go for the 6800 it has has alot of potential, definatly the best resonably priced card out right now. I am very pleased with mine, and its only a little more than the 6600GT.
 
i upgraded from a Ti4200 to a 6600GT a month ago, and there is a HUGE difference in the new DX9.0 games (obviously, since the former is a DX8.1 card and doesn't support DX9.0 games). however, i regret not going for the 6800 instead, which is only $30 more, and should be noticeably faster. not only that, but it has a huge overclocking potential, as you may be able to overclock it to 6800 GT speeds. you can probably find a 6800 for under $200 after rebates.

but if you are willing to wait for a couple of months, you can buy one of the new generation cards that should be out by then. not only that, but prices on current card should drop and you might be able to get yourself a cheap 6800GT.

don't care about nvidia, i've bounced back and forth between the two for years.

i'm looking for the best bang for my buck. i ran a ti4600 in every computer in my house up until a month ago because it was horsepower card. nowadays its just not hanging on as much as i would like. i also want the directx 9 support.

as for pricing i'm usually on a pretty lousy budget, my personal rig runs a 9700pro as my ti4600 upgrade. i am usually stuck about 1 generation behind due to finances and just overclock and tweak alot to keep myself from being dead in the water (the downside to having my hobbies being computer, playing in a band, paintball, mountainbiking, game collecting, and anime.... all really expensive hobbies). i'm probably looking for a mid range game card for under 150 bucks. i have no problem buying used and i watch the buy sell forums on here daily.

athlon xp 2500+ barton (overclocked 2800+, going to try to get it to 3200+ stable with a new cooling setup)
1 gig pc3200 ram (crucial)
450 watt quality power supply
abit nf7 (i don't think its the "S" should i upgrade this too?)

Well for 150-200 bucks or so you can get a 6600GT or a 9800Pro. The 6600GT has a lead over the 9800Pro, but not by much in the areas that matter. Either would be a great choice for the money. If you wanna spend around 300 bucks (double yer budget i know.....) the x800xl or 6800gt would be good choices.

Nvidia might be releasing their new cards in a few weeks so prices on 6800Ultras and other high end cards might go down a bit. So if you think you might wanna stick with Nvidia, wait till next month. If you wanna go ATI, buy now.

Build up that budget a little more and get yourself a 6800nu. From a person coming from a 9700 Pro in his LAN rig, I can tell you that the difference is VERY noticable. I'm very happy, shop around on the for sale forum and try to find one that unlocks, it'll make the card perform evey better (my card unlocks and OCs to 384, 775) so I almost have a 6800GT.
 
a 6600gt would be a good choice if on a budget.

btw its faster than a 9800 pro and it supports pixel shader 3.0
ati can only do 2.0
 
A good client of mine just upgraded from a TI4600 to a Radeon X800 Pro w/256MB. Haven't heard back from him yet, since he came and picked it up on Friday.

I'd say, go at least 6600GT.

I have a GF4 Ti4600 and really need to upgrade because of BF2...

I'm in a little bit of a pickle...

I’ve known that my graphics card was coming up for an upgrade fairly soon but I was planning to hold out until I could afford a new PC (prolly beyond Christmas) so that I could get a nice new PCI-Express card.

Now I’m wondering if it’s worth getting a new AGP graphics card now (because I can't wait 6 months for BF2!) I also plan to get a 1920 x 1200 monitor fairly soon and a beafy GPU would be nice.

I'm currently looking at a HIS flavour of the ATI Radeon x850XT PE but the lack of PS 3.0 is a bummer.

I'm estimating that it'll be a while before an AGP variant of the R520 is readily available in the UK (and to be honest it's a bit of a waste!)

Do you think it’s worth getting an AGP x850 XT and would you recommend anything over the HIS one (I've heard good things about the ASUS).
