I just bought a DVD burner and it came with Nero 8. I am running Windows 7 64 bit. I noticed that Nero 8 was 32 bit so I contacted Nero to see if it was compatible with my OS. They said that Nero 8 didn't support Win7 at all, but that they would sell me Nero 9 for about $60. Do I need burning software at all? I have seen recommendations for ImgBurn, would it make a good replacement for Nero? Does anyone have any suggestions on good DVD/CD burning software? Thanks

You can run (most) 32-bit apps in a 64-bit OS (as far as Windows goes anyway).

CDBurnerXP is pretty good too.

ImgBurn is the new standard. Although, if you need to burn unusual discs CDB-XP is better for that.

I'm kind of curious why you don't just try it for free, rather than burning $60? Did you think 32 bit applications can not run on X64 OS?

Anyways, Nero 8 is fully compatible with Windows 7 x64. How do I know? I have it installed right now.
Yes, ImgBurn is not only free and amazing, but it's also better than Nero.
Not for audio burning.

That's why I recommended CDBurnerXP. I compiled + burned a couple of audio CDs with ImgBurn and they both had static, I was like WTF?

Well Nero has a built in equalizer you can apply to audio files, which makes a huge difference. I don't know of any other burner that has one.

I'd rather use whatever equalizer settings are available on whatever I'm using to listen to the discs.

I'm not in a big hurry so I think I'll try the Nero 8 first and if that doesn't work I'll give ImgBurn a try. I didn't know that a 32 bit app. would work on a 64 bit system, that is why I contacted Nero. When they told me that N8 didn't support Win7 I decided to look for an alternative. Thanks for the help guys.

I think they gave you misleading info. I haven't tried Nero 8, but Nero 7 Lite works perfectly fine on Windows 7 x64.

Not all non-pc players can do that though so it's nice being on the disc.
An alternative would be to use foobar2000 (free) and apply the equalizer DSP upon conversion. Import the converted files into ImgBurn (or another free burner) and you'll have equalized tracks on the disc. Then, either retain or delete the converted, equalized tracks.

That sounds exactly like something everybody would need.
The default behavior in EAC when generating cue sheets is to write non-compliant sheets. So, yes, for those using EAC (a good many people) and generating cue sheets using the default settings (assumably a good many people), it's a valuable feature, as it ensures proper gap handling on burned discs.

I would think the latest update of Nero 8 works on Windows 7 x64. I know the latest update of Nero 7 works fine on Windows 7 x64.
