Replacement for my 8600gts?

It's noticeably better than a 8600GTS. Not a horrible deal either.

I really should have quoted my needs. Will this run games adequately at 1920x1080? Geeting this for my HTPC/secondary gaming rig that's hooked up to my HDTV.

The 8600 fails at that res.

The GT240 is not a worthy upgrade even if you got it for free.

I also have a secondary pc with a 8600GTS, and had the chance to try a GT240 a while ago. Yes its faster, but not by much.

If your gaming needs are playing at 1920x1080, you'll have to shell a lot more than 30 bucks.

Now if you can settle for 1280x720 or lower with low/medium settings, then it may be worth it.

Save some cash and get a better card.

What would be a good suggestion then? I'm looking to stay sub-100, and am looking for a decent power/performance ratio as this rig will be on 24/7 once I move to my new apt and configure it, and I don't want my power bill going through the roof.

A radeon 5570 would be a nice choice.

Just saw this great deal on a GTS250, this one should let you play most last year games with HQ settings @1920x1080 and many of the recent games if you use lower quality settings.

I would step up to the 5670 for use at that resolution over a gts250. My old 250 ran pretty warm for a small enclosure.

Really? I thought the 250 was faster. What I do know is that newer cards run cooler than when it first came out.
 
Do whatever you can to save for a GTS 250. You should be able to find them for less than $100.

It is not worth gaming at 1920x1080 on these cards. Run the game in 720p and allow your TV to scale it to 1080p.

EDIT: For reference, the GTS 250 is a rebadged 9800GTX+

The GTS250 is MUCH faster than the 5570. Even the 5670 is around a 9800gt's level, which is slower than a gts250.
 
If you can scrape together a few more dollar or buy used, try the HD5750. You're running 1080p here, for crying out loud! If you can't spend more than $100 then I'd go for a HD5670 (the version with the faster memory, not the other version which is mediocre) which is better power/heat wise than a GTS 250. 240 GT isn't horrible but it's underpowered for 1080p.

I second the recommendation to run at 720p btw.

All true. I am just concerned about putting that much heat in a htpc enclosure. The gts250 runs cooler than the 9800gtx+, but my friend's 9800gtx+ is a blowtorch!

Well geez if it's a SFF enclosure, and you want a ~$100 card, you almost certainly want to go 40nm, which means 5750 or 5670. 40nm runs much cooler and takes less power than older tech.
 
It's significantly faster than your card. Not just a little.


Problem is that deal is after rebate and the rebate is a pre-paid visa gift card. Is it a 'good' card, eh.....

If i had the chance to upgarde my 8600gts for 30 bucks to a gts240 i'd do it. But 30 after rebate I wouldn't. I'd just spent a few more bucks and get a better card.

The only downside is the GTS 250 is about 40% faster than the 5670, so you have to decide if you want the best price/performance (GTS 250), or the lowest power consumption and reasonable performance (5670).

Of course, if you can step-up to a 5750, that would be the best choice for you because it uses less power than a GTS 250, and it performs better! I'm just not sure you can find one for $100.

GTS 250 is on older tech than 40nm. Without even having to look it up, I can guarantee you that a 40-nm based 5750 draws less power. But since it only takes 10 seconds to look it up, here you go: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_5750_PCS/28.html 23W vs. 40W at idle, and 64W vs. 113W at peak. And the 5750 is slightly faster, too. It's a no-contest, 55nm+ is dead, at least for GPUs.
