Got to make a quick decission on what is better for FPS games.

What I have now:

Two eVGA 7900GT KO in SLI
3200 venice (Opteron 170) @ 2.6GHz
ASUS AN32-SLI-DELUXE M/B
Li-Lie v1100 CASE
850w PC-Power&Cooling psu
Cosair 3500LL 1 Gig Sticks (2)

Thinking of replacing the 7900GT's with one BFG 8800GTS OC2;
Mem @ 2000MHz effective, forgot what the core is.

Would appreciate any quick thoughts.

I had one 7900gt Ko and i was getting about 4800 in 06 and now with my EVGA 8800GTS 320MB im getting around 8300(CPU limited). I would strongly consider getting a new CPU because you WILL be strongly bottlenecked. My AMD X2 4200+ is bottlenecking my 8800 and im almost sure yours will too. So if you consider getting this videocard know that you wont be getting the results you expected. Also, i suggest getting the evga 8800GTS 640MB Superclocked... its a nice card too. :p

I have a Samsung 20.1 inch LCD and run everything @ native res of 1600x1200 so the cpu won't be much of a bottle neck problem.

If you play with lots of eye candy and at high resolutions, above 1600x1200 you're not going to be that badly bottlenecked in most modern games. At 1600x1200 you'd lose about 10% in performance compared to say a QX6800 at stock speeds, and like 5% at 1920x1200. In most cases you'd not even notice the difference in real game play.

It's a good upgrade for the most part I'd say.

I appreciate all your replies and I am leaning strongly to making the trade. My computer guy is supposed to be running some 3D Mark 06 tests this afternoon and I'm going to the shop at around 4PM this afternoon (est) and see the results.
Thaks

even trade? not bad

I ran into this exact same situation. I had (2) 7800GTX's in SLi, overclocked to 490/1300. Here are the results in 3dmark06:

TWO 7800gtx's overclocked in SLi

ONE 640mb 8800gts (not overclocked - stock settings)

ONE 640mb 8800gts (overclocked at 625/2000)

As you can see, the performance increase of just ONE 8800gts is really good compared to the 7800/7900 series cards in SLi. With that being said, I never had the opportunity to test it against the 7900GTX's in SLi. I'm gonna say (2) 7900GTXs in SLi would beat (1) single 640mb 8800gts.

I think one 8800GTS would beat two 7900GTX's in SLI, if just by a small margin. One 8800GTX would most certainly do the job. Even so I'd say that an 8800GTS is a decent upgrade for anyone using 7800's or 7900's of any kind. Even someone using a single 7950GX2 might consider a 8800GTS for the new features and slightly better performance. Best of all the 8800GTS will offer superior image quality to the 7950GX2 or any other 7-series cards. Quad SLI users should probably only think about investing in the 8-series under certain circumstances and then only if they go SLI. One being that if they are running Vista they'll save themselves alot of headache and two they'll get much better performance and image quality out of 8800GTX's in SLI.

That would be a nice little test.. Obviously, the image quality of the 8800s is superior to the 7800/7900's. For those with (2) 7900GTXs, an upgrade to one 640mb 8800gts is minimal. In addition to having a better image quality, the next logical benefit would be DX10. I do agree, if the 8800gts is roughly on par with (2) 7900gtx's, (1) 8800gtx will best the 7900 sli setup.

I went ahead and made the trade:D !

My two 7900gt's got about 6800 in 3dMark 06 with 2.45 GHz on cpu.
The 8800GTS OC2 got 8150 in 06 with 2.0GHz stock on the Opty 170.

The computer tech is going to further o'clock the 8800 to 650 core and 2250 memory!
With that and the Opty 170 o'clocked to 2.6 GHz I'm expecting over 8850 on 06. I'll find out tomarrow..I'm having a case mod done>>>120mm fan installed on the side of the case blowing directly on the Vid card and X-Fi Music Xtreme sound card.

Glad I made the trade...one of the 7900GT KO's fubared (again)....showed 50% cpu usage with nothing running.

Why aren't you doing these things yourself? It's not hard.

Oh...nice!!

The computer shop built the machine for me according to my specs and under his warrentee
was responcible for repairs. Went through 3 sets of video cards in 6 months.
He offered to overclock the new BFG 8800GTS OC2 even more so I naturally accepted.
I built my first computer almost 10 years ago and its still going strong..a 300A Celeron overclocked to 464MHz, running Win98SE! I just didn't have the time to start building my present machine...next one I will. I'm retired now and have the time.

Just so you all know, a 3dmark06 test at 1280x1024 with no AA is more or less worthless for an SLI setup. For an SLI benefit to really show you need to be rendering at least 1.5 million pixels with AA on. Synthetic benchmarks should be taken with a grain of sand anyway.

7900 GTX SLI beats the 640 GTS pretty badly most of the time at 1600x1200 with 4x AA, except for a few HDR game benchs. If your playing above 1280x1024 with AA up, SLI can be great.
