with furmark and my stock cooler on my stock 5870, i hit 90c easily. i have some ocz freeze laying around, and was wondering if i got rid of the pads and replaced them with the ocz freeze, should that drop my temps, or is it not worth it?

might be worth a shot, you never know. i changed the stock tim out on my xfx 5870 reference card with MX2 and didnt get a reduction in temps at all.

Well, furmark burns cards. That's just how it is.

If you insist, re-seat with some AS5.

Otherwise: after-market cooler.... Which is an entirely different thread.

Mine hit 86C (Furmark) with my room at 28C on the stock cooler.

I don't think adding your own TIM will help, much. I got the AC Accelero Extreme 5870 and it dropped my temps by 22+C with the fan at 50% and a nice OC. (Which is still dead silent.)

I vote new cooler if your going to go through the trouble of tearing it apart anyway, and funds allow. (NCIX.com has the above on sale for $49.99 ATM. Ends 08/04)

i have always changed tim on all my pc components even before installing. gpus, mobo, etc. after installing an air cooler on a gpu. wow! id go with the air cooler for your gpu!
