Hi,
I need to replace the PSU on my Compaq Presario S6150UK. It was fitted with a "Bestec ATX-250-12Z REV C" PSU and it failed luckily not taking with it the CPU or motherboard.
I am running a pretty standard set up with the exception of an extra HDD, an extra DVD-RW, a TV Tuner and a couple of PCI cards.
The system came as standard with a NVIDIA 128MB Graphics Card and 6 USB2 ports.
Am I right in thinking that a 250w PSU is a little underpowered? I am tempted to put in a 500w PSU.
I would like to know if a Casecom 500w PSU with the following rails would do the job. It seems to have all the correct plugs. Although it states 20+4 pin power plug, I guess I just wont need to connect the extra 4 pin plug to the board.

The rails on the Bestec are as follows:-
+12V/14A -12V/0.8A
+5V/25A +5VSB/2A
+3.3V/18A

+5V and +3.3V 165W MAX. +5V and +12V 218W MAX.

The rails on the Casecom are as follows:-
+12V/17A -12V/0.8A
+5V/38A -5V/0.5A +5VSB/2A
+3.3V/28A

Thats all the info I have at present.
Does it make any difference having the extra -5V supply?

Do you think that as long as the unit fits in the case it would be OK to replace it with the Casecom?

I'm not too familliar with the brand, but "Casecom" sure sounds like another knock off crappy PSU brand probably not any better than Bestec, which is about as bad as you can get. As a matter of fact the last Casecom branded PSU I saw was actually a Powmax rebadge and everyone knows that "Powmax" got it's name because of the massive "POW!" sound that will eminate from your chassis as the PSU explodes and takes all your components with it. :D

Anyway to answer your question the -5v rail doesn't exist on 98% of current power supplies and likewise is only needed on certain fairly rare motherboards. You should be able to use a new PSU without issue.

If you're looking for a really low cost replacement unit I'd look at something from FSP/Sparkle. Even a low cost 300w - 400w FSP is going to be leaps and bounds better than that Bestec. *shudder*.

You're better off buying a good 300w - 350w than a cheap 500w.

Strangely enough I just looked at an Emachines with that exact PSU, it had died and taken the motherboard with it  And that's why you don't want a cheap PSU.

Thanks guys....I was thinking maybe a Coolermaster eXtreme Power 380W PSU or a Coolermaster IGreen 430W PSU....I think you're right to spend a bit more $. Which one would you guys go for?

What about Seasonic S12 Series 330W or I have the chance of a really cheap Seasonic SS-300FT 300W ATX PSU. The Seasonic S12 Series 330W has a 24 pin power plug which i guess i'd have to use an adaptor. The SS-300FT 300W ATX PSU uses a 20 pin like mine. Which would be the best?

If this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817151021)is what you were trying to buy look at this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817189005). The latter is the one I was recommended when I looked.

On mine (different one) 24 pin connector has 4pins seperated that I assume you don't have to plug in. It is not a one piece connector at the end. This picture is better cause you see the break on the left with the black connector. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowI...+CB,+VDE,+FIMKO,+DEMKO,+NEMKO,+SEMKO+-+Retail. Looks the same on the goodpower.

Are you planning on upgrading parts or still using your compaq for a while?

I would much rather have a 330w Seasonic than a 500w xClio, they're quieter, more efficient, all round higher quality and the cables come pre sleeved which looks much better.
