Replace a broken disc?

I am wondering...

I have a dvd disc that is cracked. I bought the movie brand new at the store. Is there some way that you can request a disc replacement from the disc production factory?

I mean when you buy a disc the $20 is mostly for the cost of licensing the movie. I am pretty sure that the actual physical production of the disc and box cost probably 50cents if not less since they manufacture in hundreds of thousands units.

Does some policy like this even exist? I remember some game company would replace a cd if you scratched, cracked, or damaged the disc. You just had to pay the return shipping and mail them your original disc that was broken.

Anything like that exist for DVD's?

I really dont want to have to pay another $20 for it. Another question since i bought the movie and busted the disc.....wouldnt it technically be legal if i borrowed a copy and burned it? I mean i did pay for the movie in the first place....:)

dont know about the replacement of the disk.... but as for useing a back up ...if you bought it and have the retail box with the retail upc (proff's of purchase) then yes i assume it is compleatly legal... you have the right to own copys of your own stuff... and as many of them as you want... as long as you dont give them away or sell them, (or oone them out... ) besides... there no way they (the man if you will ) can do any thing about it... as long as you dont obtain it throught a mannor that may be suspicious (ie, dont go down loading a new copy from the net...get it from a friend and copy it...) store it in the retail box..... perhaps keep the orriginal disk, you never know when you'll get audited and have to prove purchase.

I was just reading an article about DVD X copy.
Here's a quote to make you feel better.

Jack Valenti, head of the Motion Picture Association of America, has suggested that consumers have no legitimate need for such software, telling The Associated Press in November, "If you buy a DVD you have a copy. If you want a backup copy you buy another one."

If it were me in the situation, I would either find someone with the dvd and copy it, or if I was really bored, call the movie publisher and ask them what to do about it.
I am buying the movie or a license to view the movie?

More than likely, i would just rent the movie and make a copy.

Make this real simple - take it back to where you bought it. This will only work if you still want the same movie. Most places will replace like with like even if it is opened.

I had problems with my Matix DVD so I took it back and exchanged it for another Matrix DVD and now it works great. I just got a bum disc.

If you cracked it I doubt you'll be able to get a free replacement. You can try and see if the retailer is generous in replacing it. good luck.

Theres nothing wrong with makeing a personal copy of a CD or DVD for your OWN use if you already bought a copy once.

And if there is then thats the gayest thing i've ever heard lol.
