Score.

So I got bored this morning, and I was surfing Bit-Tech looking at some guys mod for his computer cases and such. I got to a section where he said "... I got bored last night so I decided to clean the ick out of my waterblocks with ketchup."

At first I had to ROFL at him because, Ketchup? C'mon, a common condiment found in all homes across north America, bah, that will do fuck all.

So the more I thought about the more I got curious, and then the more I realized what shitty condition my waterblocks were in. I'd bee messing around with my waterblocks lately just lapping them for shits and giggles until I can get more tubing, so I decided "What the hay, might as see if "ketchup" would work."

I took off the tops, then I dumped some ketchup into my GPU block seeing as how I consider my GPU block the ginny pig. I watched, nothing happened, so I grabbed a toothbrush and began to scrub, nothing happened.

I got a little pissed, so I scrubbed some more, and holy shit. The block was coming clean.

My god, all this time I thought I would have to order some expensive shit off of the internet to fix the corrosion that had been caused, and all my problems and solutions revovled around Ketchup. Fuck.

So yeah, in conclusion, ketchup is my new best friend.

Now I wonder. If you wanted to keep the corrosion away, could you run a few dabs of ketchip in your cooling solution as well as water? Or would that be just plain old silly?

First of all, thanks for the amusing story :)

Second, it seems to me that the ingredients of ketchup responsible for cleaning corrosion and such are most effective in concentrated form. That is, the moment you've diluted it in liters of water, its effect will be minimal.

You could try running just ketchup through your loop, though :D

What did the cleaning was the acid and vinegar content in the ketchup.

While it did remove the gunk built of over time the last thing you want circulating in your system is acid.

The best stuff is Revere Ware instant Stainless Steel Cleaner and can be probably found in your kitchen. ;) Whoever does the cooking in your household has probably been using it for years to clean their stainless steel and copper pots and pans. Just wipe it on and wipe off all the gunk :D

P.S. Make sure you flood the part with water afterward and don't touch the copper with your fingers. Oh and this stuff is really expensive! I think the last time I bought it was about $7 for a 16 Oz bottle.

Eagle One Cast Aluminum Wheel Cleaner from Advance Auto, Autozone, etc. -- the kind that says "Not for use on clear coated wheels!" - it is acid.

Spray it on, wait 20 seconds, rinse off and dry it. $5 for a spray bottle about the same size as a large spray bottle of window cleaner. The most funky block I ever cleaned looked as good as new after the above with the addition of about 5 seconds of scrubbing with a toothbrush dipped in the wheel cleaner.

There is another type of commercial acid designed for metal cleaning that only comes in gallon jugs but it is hard to find, more expensive and it will cause chemical burns the second it lands on skin...other than that, it is fun stuff to have around. :)

if you want to skip the ketsup entirely, try pure distilled white vinegar -- about $1 per gallon at the grocery store..
