Hello all, I got a Gateway FPD2485W free from a friend and of course we all know these are nothing but trouble. The monitor turns on, gets to the gateway logo and then the screen shuts off, but the monitor still stays on, for instance the touch sensitive buttons work and the sound as well, just no picture.

I started with replacing all of the capacitors on the power supply board (B) circled in green, except for the big guy cirlced in blue. I also replaced 1 bad cap on the video board (C) circled in yellow, but still the same results. My question is should I now try the remaining caps on (C) or the 2 on (A). Or could this be another issue other then the caps. Ive read a ton of stuff online and it seems most people have success from just replacing the bad caps on (B) the power supply board.

Thanks for any help, cant complain since it was free but of course would love to get it to work. I appreciate it.

Can you see anything on the display if you shine a really bright flashlight at it?
The fact that it can display the Gateway logo would suggest a problem in the logic board (c) to me, personally. Perhaps replace the remaining caps and try to reflow it?

The normal thing to do after replacing all the capacitors would be to replace the transistors in the power inverter board (A). However, those things are freaking tiny on your board.

Hope you figure it out. I been using that monitor for going on 5 years. Still under warranty with BestBuy I wish it would die so I get a newer monitor ;)

thanks guys, heading to get the rest of the caps tomorrow. Determined to figure this one out.

RE: thefreeaccount, no luck with the flashlight trick. Darkness is all I see.

RE: EvilViking, wonder if they could tell if you took it apart and threw a bad cap in there. Might be grounds for a replacement :D

haha. ya that would be nice. But to be honest I don't even care for the monitors they sell. They were selling the HP ZR24W for about 2 weeks. Now they stopped carrying it
