Repairing/Decoding/Unpacking 50gb File

Hi all,

I was wondering what I can do to increase the performance of repairing/unpacking of a 200 part 50gb file? Currently I have 2 500gb deskstars in a raid 0 , an X3210 OC'd to 3.2ghz, 1000mhz 2gb memory (give or take a few hz) on an IP35 Pro board running windows 7.

Only reason I ask is because 2 hours to complete this process is ridiculous in my mind. I checked the performance meter and it shows my HDD only doing a max of 32MB/s sorta slow in my mind for a set of drivse that benchmarked in vista at 130mb/s . CPU usuage is maybe 15 percent, then memory usage is at half. Program that is doing the repairing and unpacking is Grabit, possibly the problem?

Any suggestions would be apreciated, hardware, software, or is it as fast as it is going to be?

Edit: Did some more investigating, I think I may have found my issue. I keep all of my bulk files on one partition wich I named Storage, while I have my OS on another partition called Fast (yes the fast partition is actually faster then the Storage partition as per HDtach). So as I go to extract the file I notice it gets pulled over to the Fast partition for processing in the MFT then goes back to the Storage drive. I would have to guess this is a bottle neck. I am going to move these files around and see what happens.

You're source and destination are the same drive? If so, then yup, there's a bottleneck. If you need some suggestions for new drives, go with the single platter 500GB drives from Seagate (7200.12) or Samsung (F3), or their 1TB versions. Those drives typically get 105MB/s on their own.
 
Moving that file to your East partition may help a bit for two reasons. You know it's faster cuz of the rotational speed on that part of drive and secondly your seeks should be much shorter so there should be a slight benefit there too. Of course that's nothing compared to shoving it on another physical drive.
 
Is a repair done in-place? If so, then I don't think you can speed that process up with a separate drive. :( But yes, separate drives would definitely help unpacking/packing.
 
I might as well explain the whole process.

Download w/ grabit , grabit is on the Fast partition while it is saving the files on Storage partition (both part of the same Raid 0 array, the Fast partition is just the quicker part of the drive)

Repairing/Unpacking is done from the Storage partition using WinRar (winrar is installed on the Fast partition)

From what I am seeing using the performance monitor the process is this (not by my control just how windows is working the files):

Files are downloaded (200 or so rar files) goes to the fast partition first and are then copied over to the storage partition as each file is finished downloading

When the files are being processed for repairing and unpacking the files is copied over one by one to the fast partition , processed, and builds up the original file on the fast drive.

Once the files have been all unpacked the complete file is on the fast partition and is then copied back over to the storage partition .


This process is way to complex, with the files going from partition to partition I assume I am losing speed. Tonight when I get home I am going to make the drives into one RAID 0 partition instead of 2 and hope performance gains are seen.

Does this make sense? Cause it doesn't to me on why windows would let files be copied all over the place from partition to partition.
