A friend of mine replaced his winlogon.exe file with a different one and has been having problems booting ever since. Now when he turns his PC on he gets to the "Windows Loading" screen and his PC restarts. He has attempted to boot from the Windows XP CD by selecting to "repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console," but after he enters "FIXBOOT" it asks him whether he is sure he wants to write a new boot sector to the partition c. What's going to happen next - should he enter yes or will he lose all of his data?

That won't fix winlogon. Fixboot rewrites the Boot.ini file, and ntldr and ntdetect.com.

Boot BartPE and recopy over his winlogon from the backup you made.

(Oh, and don't mess with winlogon.exe)

I'm not being a smartass but I have heard this to happen in the XP Pro Warex Edition. Ask your friend where he got his Windows Disc from.
Good Luck!!

I am confused. We attempted to replace the winlogon.exe file with the one on the cd but that didn't work.
