i have a socket a mobo where the cpu lever is snapped so i tried to remove the top slidy layer of the socket a but then i snapped the whole thing off. the second layer is ok.
i used a flat headed screw driver and pryed it off.

but for reference, when i replace this socket a cpu lever and top level how do i remove it carefully without snapping it? is there a special tool to use?

Most of the pictures I've seen of this use just a small screw driver to pop it off.

The board is still usuable though, as long as you remove the socket, you could install another one from a dead board, it is time consuming and tricky work though. If the board has through hole mounts for a heatsink you could make yourself a mainboard with an embedded cpu...

thats what i did, i placed a flat head screw driver under neath the cpu socket and turned it to pop it off, but it cracked and i thought uh oh and i ripped the whoole top layer off. lol . yeah i can replace it from another dead socket a mobo but this time ive got to be careful if i wanna save that perfect mobo which broke on purpose by mistake =p
