running win7 64bit. hp 500gb external harddrive. i have no desktop, only laptop

randomly just happened one day. i plug in my external, takes awhile for the computer to pick up the external (couple minutes), and then it says the harddrive is inaccessible and i must format it. i had a similar problem before, but then one time i plugged in the harddrive and somehow windows explorer said there was a repair option. so i did that and then harrdrive was fine. i've been downloading a bunch of guis but none seem to be able to access the harddrive. i've downloaded boot disks, but they are pointless because when you boot up they can't detect external usb harddrives. the only thing that seems like it's even attempting to repair is running chkdsk in windows. the problem with that is that the scan never finishes. i run it, it runs for like 30min, couple hundred sectors (out of like 100k+) then the scan just randomly stops

any suggestions? any programs i can use to try to fix?

put it in a plastic bag, seal it, and then in the freezer for a couple of hours. if your computer can read from the drive then back up your data. you can then try running a check disk + sector scan on it but really I would toss it.

test it in other unit, if you encounter the same problem, you need to reformat it... ... :)
