Found this: http://www.bit-tech.net/article/141/ on the front page.......

[Homer Simpson] Mmmmmmm Folding box... MMmmmmmm [/Homer Simpson]

I'd like to have a few of those sitting around the house.... it's even got the router/switch/hub/whatever in the bottom......... must..... replicate.........

Keep on Folding!!

Haha, yeah... Thats the first thing I thought of when I saw that thing too... :D

First thing I said, and it was outloud, this morning, was "Screw rendering! give me Folding @ Home!"

If I'm not mistaken that's very simillar to Turmelles pen drive farm/box. I don't know why more people don't do something like that? Maybe some enterprising [H]'er could build one and put together a list of materials that's easily reproduceable so we could all go out and build one. Maybe the Egg will start stocking kits to build a folding farm. :)

Danged impressive. We cold all use a few of those :D

Does anyone happen to have a link to this pen drive farm? I had this idea not long ago because I have access to a ton of small dell USB keys.

Also, how would one go about having all those PC's act as one? I would love to do something like he did, but the article doesnt mention how he managed to combine all the procs into one.

I don't know how he did it in the article, Beowulf maybe? I believe in Turmelles setup the machines were independant from each other, so it wasn't really a cluster, more of a "farm-in-a-box" type thing. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yup, I'm 99.9% sure that Turmelle just used them as standalone machines.... but they were all in a nice little space.... with folding, you wouldn't need to have them act as one.... it's easier and better to just use them as a standalone PC..... having them in the same place is just an added bonus :D

speaking of Turmelle, forgive a noob for asking, but who is/was he/she? And why isn't he/she still posting? (or is he/she and i'm just blind?)

I thought he/she was the person who came up w/ blades for folding..but idk if i'm right

I don't think Turmelle has posted in almost nine months... Last I saw was in January.

He, Brian, I think may have come up with The Folding Stack, which is precisely what this renderfarm is.. In fact there are some old threads with photos of his stacks around. SWMBO may have killed him for all the power he was sucking down. I think he had 30+ machines at home.

Yeah, he stopped posting and his production dropped. No one has heard from him that I know of. He did a great job putting that box together.

And that has what to do with this group? :D

Here is another pic of a render/folding farm. Oddly enough, this pic is listedthe "funny pictures" section of this site. I have great respect for whoever did this work. I can't find anything funny about this.

One thing I've been wondering about is heat issues on this approach.
