renaming folders on vmfs

Long ago I created some VMs in ESX, that have now turned into different servers. I've renamed them in Virtual Center so they come up correctly there, but if I browse the datastore the folders show the old server name instead of what I've renamed them to. I know this has no bearing on performance, and it might be an aesthetic thing but I want to rename the folders on the datastore to match the correct server name. Doing so of course breaks the links and stops the VM from turning on, and I can't find where in the VMX file to make the changes relate back. Is there more than one file I have to change as well?

Anyone know what I have to change to allow this?

cold migrate, storage vmotion - take your pick. Let it do it right though :) It'll make everything match the display name you set after you do either.

If you wanted to do it that way, you'd have to unregister the vm, edit the VMX to fix the scsi links and possibly a few others (nvram, etc), and then reregister it.
 
Would you mind pointing me in the right direction with cold migration. What I've found online makes it look like it for moving VMs off of a SAN onto another one? I would like to keep my VMs data on the SAN where it is.
 
rename, cold migrate, pick the same datastore ;)

edit: It will eat the space during hte copy.
