renaming folder on NAS causes duplicate folder to be made

A client has a NAS drive where all thier files are stored. 3 to 4 people access this file share on their internal network and at least 2 people are having this problem.
When someone goes and renames and existing folder (example: WorkFolder1 UPDATED) it seems to update the folder name and everything is normal. What is strange is when they are done renaming/working they close the windows explorer file box as usual. Next time they open up the network drive there is now 2 folders... WorkFolder1 UPDATED and WorkFolder1 both of the folders have all of the files in them. It seems that renaming the folder makes a duplicate of the original with the new updated name and the original stays there. Any ideas?

Does the duplicate folder remain after a long time, or is it just immediately after the renaming? I have seen something similar to this on FreeNAS between the time of the renaming and the delay before the CIFS share is re-synchronized completely.

Good question. Pretty sure it remains until they manually delete it. I will see if I can find that out for certain though.

Are there still files under the old folder name, and are they actually the same files as under the new folder name (i.e. if you edit WorkFolder1\Test.doc does WorkFolder1 UPDATE\Test.doc also get changed)? If someone has a file open under the folder being renamed (or a phantom lock) maybe the NAS is just creating a junction with the new name, leaving the old name there as well so that those locks are still valid, instead of just failing the rename.
