I have been trying to get control of my temperatures so I decided to change the TIM on my 780i chipset. I took the heat pipe assembly off to find that the chips were coated with a tough and brittle material. I was able to pick a bit of this off by hand but the rest is stuck solid on the heatpipe and half the chip. I tried the artic silver alcohol based cleaning fluids I had but these made no difference. Does anyone have any tips? I am not sure if I should just be a bit more forceful and scrape it off with a tool but am a little wary at this stage. Thanks

Put some rubbing alcohol on a cloth and just start rubbing. It should come off after a while. Then use your AC cleaning fluid to purify the surface and you can apply the new TIM.
