Removing Thermal Paste

I don't have access to isophibopofirolic alcohol at the moment and I need to replace the retail cpu/hsf on my barton 2500. What household items can I use to remove the old thermal gunk that's on it now? Toilet paper? Kleenex? Qtip? Papertowel? Wax Paper? Or should I really really wait to get the right alcohol stuff.
 
I ran my proc at 100% full load for 2 hours and then just used cleenex.

I've had no problems.
 
I would wait and get rubbing alcohol, but then again, I'd call that a household item that everyone has. Kleenex sometimes have perfume that can leave an oily residue (bad). Good for noses though. Alcohol evaporates, and leaves nothing behind.

I hope you mean isopropyl.

I agree with djnes; you should really wait until getting isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol to clean off the thermal paste.
 
Acetone, wood alcohol or denatured alcohol will work. Avoid nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol because they contain skin conditioners that aren't good to mix with thermal paste. In a pinch, coffee filters make a passable lint-free cloth.
 
Hmm damn. Didn't know Rubbing Alcohol was a bad thing. I used it, and it worked for me pretty well... Hmm.. oh well.

Here in Philly, rubbing alcohol IS isopropyl alcohol, with nothing added. Nail polish remover and rubbing alcohol are 2 different things.
 
Nail polish remover is acetone with additives (like maybe fragrances).

The isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol I have is just a mixture of water and isopropyl.
 
It is definitely possible that not all brands of "rubbing" alcohol have non-water additives. Check the ingredients, and if it's just alcohol (or w/ just water), go for it. FWIW, denatured alcohol works just as well and is cheaper (check your local hardware or WalMart). Also purer than drug store isopropynol.
